An account of the resource
Boston-born James A. B. Butterfield fought for the Union in the Second Illinois Cavalry during the Civil War. Sergeant Butterfield died on May 6, 1865, from injuries suffered at the explosion of the SS Sultana, the largest maritime disaster in American History. Eighteen hundred of the nearly twenty-five hundred passengers aboard the Sultana perished in the explosion on the Mississippi River near Memphis, Tennessee. In addition to Butterfield, recently freed Union prisoners of war from the Andersonville Confederate Prison perished in the disaster. Corporal Butterfield rests in the Riverside Cemetery at Oregon, Ogle County, Illinois. <br /><br />Images in this collection include a tintype of Corporal Butterfield and graves from Riverside Cemetery in Oregon, Illinois.

The grave of James A. B. Butterfield stands in Riverside Cemetery at Oregon, Illinois.
