Davenport fought in the United States Army during the War of 1812 and later in the Black Hawk War. Davenport worked with settlers along the Mississippi River as a trader American Fur Company. He served as a United States Indian Agent for the Sauk and the Fox from 1838-1840. Davenport retired after helping to negotiate a treaty between the Sauk and Fox and the Iowa territorial government over the sale of land in Iowa. Davenport was murdered in his home by a gang of bandits in 1845. The city of Davenport, Iowa is name for him. Photographs in this collection include images of the Davenport home in Rock Island before and after restoration in the twentieth century.
