</p><p>I recently wrote a letter of censure to you, with heart-felt sincerity, (the only way that Jo. Knox ever writes a letter) but since I wrote it, I have known more & better of you. I'll tell you how I acquired my knowledge. I have just recd a letter from my more than "well beloved son" <u>George</u>, of Capt. Silversparre's Battery at Pittsburg Landing, in which he speaks of your kind & <u>condescending</u> notice of him on that bloody battle field & invitation to call in the eve'g at your quarters. For that, Governor, my heart gushes its warmest thanks. I may copy our Saviours language & say to you, "whosoever doeth it to me of the least of these (my babies) doeth it unto me". Yates,

Hospitals are under the entire control of the U.S. Authorities. If any opening occurs for Special Surgeons I will advise you at once.

</p><p>I have my certificate for having passed a successful examination before the army board of "regular service" bearing date/49 - have diplomas

<p>from two several medical schools of the city of N York studied as private pupil in the office of Profs Mott & Van Buren of that city - after which I served three years in the capacity of assist Surg. in the wards of Bellview hospital & for the last eight years been actively engaged in medical & surgical practice in the Mississippi valey
</p><p>If desired I think that I can obtain a letter from each member of the profession in this county
</p><p>I have thus refered to my standing in our profession with more of frankness than I should venture to adopt under other circumstances

about to resign his position as Judge
of the 12th Judicial Circuit having already
announced himself as a candidate for
Congress in this the 9th Congressional district. His resignation will not however
take effect untill some time in July
and in the mean time the new Constitution will either be adopted or rejected
and if adopted the appointment of his
(Marshall's) successor will devolve
upon you and if I have any assurance
that I can be elected to the same position in November I should like to
have the appointment. But otherwise
I should not.
</p><p>The attornies of this circuit generally

<p>determine the matter as to whom they
will elect for the Office of Judge and
I will have an opportunity in three or
four weeks of seeing a majority of
them and of ascertaining their feelings
on the subject, and after seeing them
