Jefferson Co

May 3rd/62

Gov Yates

Dr Sir

You will perhaps think me presumptive in thrusting myself on your precious time, but you will please give me a hearing. You are aware perhaps that Jefferson County is in the main, strong Secesh, and our small village, Rome is ruled by traitors and sent 7 or 8 men to the Rebel Army some 8 or 9 months ago, and one of those, worse than Southern traitors, was wounded & taken prisoner by our men at Pittsburgh & is now in St Louis, his friends from here have visited him & are about getting him home on parole, and we are not going to have it so, we say he shall not live here any more, and have told them we will hang him most assuredly if he comes, but they are strong & we are weak, our men are nearly

all in the army, and they have organized all the Knights of the Golden Circle into Companies & are well armed & prepared to fight for R.W. Carpenter when he is brought home. Day before yesterday they sent a man around to tell us that we should not even talk any more against him or make any threats against him or the traitorous cause, or our blood would be shed & our houses burned, that they were prepared at a moments warning to kill every Lincoln Abolitionist, and have been instructed in every form by them, had to listen to their treason& no way to help ourselves. They all claim to be union men every one of them, but all belong to the H.G.C. and hurrah for Jeff Davis, & do everything against the Union Cause & Union Soldiers, the school teachers even taught the little children that Jeff Davis was the present president & encouraged them to write compositions against our flag the immortal Stars & Strips. We have applied to the Military Authorities time and again but they don't heed such things

I wish you would help us if possible, send a man, shrewd & trusty to Rome & let him pretend to be Secesh

& he can so get inside their organizations & d out things You would not believe were I to tell you, & then do have them arrested & compelled to quit talking treason. Just to think our boys are in the army, deprived of all comforts & giving their lives even to protect those same traitors not in the south but here at home in our own free beloved State the home of the brave Illinois troops, I will give you the names of some of the meanest traitors at Rome, Doctor Lakin John Cross, Jo Slanitstein (Frenchman) William Carpenter, Henry Caldwell, Saml Caldwell Lige Harmon, William McConnell & Many others too in significant to mention, Dr. Lakins son is all right, seen off & joined our army & his father denies him shelter under his roof. I do not want any one to know I wrote this or we would be burned out before morning but I will refer you

to good loyal men to prove there assertions, Citizens of Rome , Doctor Jones Hiram Milburn, James [Lenity?] , and John Maxfield, but do send a Spy please Some of the Union ladies of Rome have sent into Marion County for Revolvers to defend themselves but cannot obtain them yet. I have seen & heard so much of your kindness to our brave soldiers & your strong love for our good cause that I thought surely you would not suffer traitors to rule in any portion of the state over which you are Governor, and I made face enough to tell you thinking if I could do no good thereby it surely would do no harm as my letter does not require a reply

Yours very respectfully

Mrs Kate Andrews

Write that this letter did not come to my notice till to day - that the patriotic spirit she manifests is admirable - but hope that all is now quiet in The "Eternal City" and then send this letter to Hon D.L. Philips and suggest this lady as a valuable correspondent

Miss Kate Andrews

                <text>
Rome, Ill,

5 Rue de la Paix

Paris - May 11th / 62

My dear friend Emma

Every day since my arrival here & even before quitting London - my firm intention has been to sit down & send to you, cherie, my greeting. for ere this you must be a mama & let me hope, a happy one. That you cannot fail to be - if your own health has not suffered too severely. Is it not worth all the pain to hold in your arms the little one? Oh! I am so anxious to know what it is! but believe me you will love it just as well if it is a boy as though your wish for another [illegible]

to be born had been fulfilled. - I have thought of you every day for weeks past: I said to Mr Booth a dozen times a day - "I wonder if Emma's baby has yet come"! We are in the gayest capital of the world now: but I doubt very much if anything I could tell you regarding it would interest you or engage your thoughts for any moment away from home made so recently a new world to you. How I should like to have
seen you the day after! I am writing now with my heart full of the hope that you came safely through. If so, you will be convalescent when this reaches you & as soon as you are able I hope to hear from your dear self, all about the hard & anxious time: from the

beginning to the end. I left [stifling?]old London with a mixed feeling of sorrow & gladness. My little villa just began to assume a more cheerful aspect. The gardens looked so inviting & I had become thoroughly initiated into the deep & uninteresting mystery of housekeeping: which was very Nora-like at first I assure you. Here, everything is 'toujours gai' you know: but I was so fearful of changing my darling baby's food: which in London was so excellent. But I lost no time here in procuring the very best milk & I am happy to say - she thrives just as well as in her little nursery at Stamford Villa. Mr Booth's parental affection increases rapidly to be best accounted for perhaps by the fact that the little pet never cries but is as smiling a baby as a

as a little bird the live long day. Pray, my darling friend, avoid all the old fashioned ideas of dosing for colic etc: which most nurses imagine
the sole cause of a crying spell. 'Tis the continual giving of what is termed soothing syrup &c - that worries the child & brings on all sorts of disorders. Nature is the best nurse. Are you able to nurse yourself? if so you know that everything depends upon yourself. The change of air
from London gave my Edwina a slight cold being the first she ever had. I was alarmed: but resisted my desire to give her a little something
for it. The next day her little bowels were slightly disorderly for the first time also : but I waited to see if all would come right again & my patience was fully repaid : for by the evening her cold had disappeared & all. Nature requires no urging.

I had a note from your Grandmama the other day. She was not well enough to see me before I left. She spoke of you - I [experienced?]
her hope that she was a Grandmother.

I wonder if your family will pass through Paris, this summer? As yet we have seen but little of this wonderful place. We don't like making a trip of pleasure & as we are likely to remain here two months at least we enjoy ourselves leisurely. The Theater of course will be attended to all in due time. We were fortunate enough to see LeMaitre, the actor in his great role of Don Ceasar: the poor old man has lost almost the fame he once possessed : but there remains still all the grace of action & the mast of his great originality, so that made of in

a great measure - for what younger men possess: voice & elasticity of action; [Riston?] I expect will be here & we await her appearance with anxiety. [Presently?] we expect a delightful day at Pere la Chaise. You know the great interest it possesses; so I will not offer any superfluous descriptives. - I find doing all that I could hope or wish for, in the shape of baby clothes - you will have really to look at & enjoy them - when I return for by that time you will have your darling in short clothes. They look so pretty when that time arrives. Lucy has quite
neglected me of late : although I expect every day now a letter from her announcing to me your condition. I shall be annoyed most dreadfully if I

don't know soon. We are worse off here for news than in London. Mr Booth can only see the journals at his Bankers & after a long walk there - before breakfast - arrives to find every one taken off by anxious absentees like himself. We have not yet made up our minds when to return. At all events Edwin has no thought of acting in England again. Tragedy is dead there. Next season all the old standard theaters change
hands for they are all losing money. Except Mr Sothern who is very successful in 'Lord [Dundreary?]' That speaks well for the taste of the legitimate. Mr Booth has no ambition to act for nothing - and to make any money now in England is out of the question.

The prejudice against Americans is very great at the present time. I have had one letter from dear Mrs [Felton?] of Cambridge, since her
husband's death. She is resigned & more cheerful than we expected. I long to get home again. My only anxiety now is to secure here a good French nurse. Have you a competent one? 'Tis a difficult thing to find in America. Now, dear child I must close. Let me hear soon from you
& pray be generous & tell me all: for I shall not rest satisfied 'til I hear from yourself. The photograph I enclose is very bad of me: but pretty good of the baby. I took off her little shoes - & you see how her feet look. Don't imagine I look as hideous as [illegible] in the picture. 'Tis only a mother's anxiety that overshadows my face. I shall sit here & send you a better one. My love to all & a thousand kisses to it
affectionately

Your Friend Mary

[vertically on page 1]

I have blotted this and and am almost ashamed to send it. I hop you will excuse the untidy appearance.

the sole cause of a crying spell.

Then & in that event the legislature might redistrict the State, for Congress &c & by that means, elect our men to the next Congress! But is there a majority yet in both branches? One thing I would suggest, which is this, In the Proclamation Convening the legislature, would it not be well to leave out the subject of the State assuming any portion of the direct tax. The opposition party are down on this tax, & in the event they do adopt this "Koran" Let them take the responsibility & not us, for should it be adopted (& I fear it will) they will make a H--l of a dash & Rush to fill all the places made vacant by it. I hope this "Koran" may not be adopted, we are doing all we can against it but the party is directed to go for it. Our men are a unit [to?] it together with some Lo.cos.

Dear Sir,

I noticed an article in the Register last evening, in reference to a trip to Pittsburg Landing; to bring off the sick and wounded soldiers belonging to the state of Illinois.

I could not help seeing, that it referred to the trip, you were kind enough to indulge me in going along; as nurse, and also in the hope of finding my sons (who are in the U.S service & one of which I know was there during that battle)

I should consider myself an ungrateful wretch, after all the kindness you extended to us, & all the pleasures you sacrificed for the benefit, and comfort of those on board, I mean (the sick wounded and lowly in position)

if I could calmly read that article, and withhold my testimony to the contrary. Who among that party could have witnessed the dignified bearing and unassumed modest deportment of Mrs Major Reynolds, and be so jealous and envious of the commission she so worthily obtained, and utter such base falsehood and calumny, ought to be branded as cowards, and traitors, I had never either seen or heard of her previous to her coming on the boat; but I saw in her much to admire, and nothing to be condemned; by the most fastidious eye; I was but a silent spectator of everything on board the boat, except so far as my duties as volunteer nurse may be considered; with no expectations, nor aspirations, higher than the desire to prove my loyalty to my country and set an example that would encourage my sons to do their duty disinteredly and honorably, therefore, I saw through eyes

undimmed by the green eyed monster and no matter what the consequences are to myself would refute every word of the base calumny against all the party. I well recollect that some of us were asked to go on board another boat to care for those on board but we were so few that I thought we should be needed where we were and refused to go (I think you never knew of this circumstance) but these circumstances connected with that request and the person who made it that would not add to the lustre of the character it would represent but of which I deemed it prudent not to speak until the newspaper article again brought it to mind and knowing which I would not have gone on board that boat even if I had been obliged to get home as best I could since my return here I have had much of this kind of talk

thrown into my face by persons who pretend to hold position but who are not worthy to tie the shoe strings of your honor heretofore I have been one of the opposite party to yourself and confess that calumniators had prejudiced me against you but your disinterested kindness and the real feeling I saw you show for the poor suffering of our humiliated countrymen inspired me with the highest respect and gratitude for yourself and those who aid you at the commencement of the war myself and friends laid aside party spirit and contend for loyalty to the old flag I taught my son that I adhere to it still I believe I have served faithfully and had it not been disinterestedly might have made a great display of some services which I have rendered for many times I have risked my own life to aid loyalty and can bring the evidence from persons now holding high positions in Government affairs
