Dear Sir

Your very kind letter came to hand on yesterday. Permit to express my thanks for your very kind offer & for your generous appreciation of my poor services to the cause. Would it be any trespass upon your time & patience, to suggest to me what course I had better pursue, about class or grade of appointment it would be proper for me to apply for, & through what channel I had better make the application &c &c Any suggestions from you will be thankfully received & duly appreciated Since I saw you, I have been confined to the house almost all the time & it is now reduced to a certainty that my health will not sustain the labors of my present position & I will be compelled elsewhere to seek the "bread that perisheth" & to

relinquish the ministry as my exclusive business & make my labors in that line incidental. This is a very great trial to my feelings for if ever a man loved to preach I do & if I were so situated that I could, I should delight above all things to be instant in season & out of season in preaching to the poor & needy, the destitute & the afflicted, without fee or reward. The mere labor of preaching is not the labor that prostrates my body, but it is the anxieties & mental exercises growing out of my responsibilities as a pastor which so thoroughly uses up my strength

My health is sufficient for any business which does not involve this mental anxiety, nor extraordinary physical exertion. I suppose that the Albany Regency will absorb all the foreign consulates that would pay a man for leaving his native shores. But perhaps a subordinate place in some

of the Departments at Washington or a berth in some of the Land offices of the New States or Territories or an appointment among the other officials of the Territories.

I would like something which would enable me to lay up enough in 4 years to start in some business which would bring me a living

I have written thus frankly to you, because I felt from the tone of your letter to me, that I could do so without annoying you. With many prayers for the Divine blessing upon you & yours, I remain

Your sincere friend

James J Ferree

PS Permit me to congratulate you on your firm adherence to the declarations of your inaugural as indicated in your reported refusal to appoint Commissioners to the Grand Patching convention at Washington on the 4th. My deliberate opinion is that every thing that even squints at concession on our part is widening a chasm that nothing but the blood of our citizens will ever fill up consequently, the more of it the worse it will be for the incoming Administration I think our duty is simply to stand firm

JJF

Rev. Ferrees letter -

Write Ferree know not what to recommend - he had better write Washburne Arnold &c & interest them - that so many look to me, fear very many be disappointed

boast that the Law Must take its Course & it is

your own misfortune & we are bound to live on the

procured from at least Four-fifths of our Citizens an

assent to have the Legal proceedings for the Collection

of debts of a civil nature Stayed for a Season & let

us have an opportunity to save our property from the

hands of speculators & Capitalists. We do not wish to be

exonerated from the payment of our just honest debts

nay verily far be it from us; but let us have a chance to

live, defray the Expenses of our Government & then when

as we fondly anticipate our Glorious Government shall

be again restored let us pay our debts and be saved

to be heard when the voice of our people would

I am convinced & can fully assure your Honor

                    <text>
Baltimore, Third day
12th Second M 1861
Dear Cousin Thee sees I keep at my old habits of writing for 40 years but it is prose now, not poetry I hope thy patience will hold out as I am nearly through After bringing the account down to father's death, I shall give thee a short sketch of Mother's history which will close it I thought I would send to thee, (being the oldest Townsend) what I know of the family and perhaps the children, at some day might become interested in it I am copying it, of evenings from a long history of my own life, which I have written for my two young ones I would give a big price for a history of our folks 5 or 6 generations back We all continue [well?] Sally Townsend of Wm is down stairs but don't go out yet had a fall on the ice, in her own yard some 3 weeks ago, then a [illegible] spell She is feeble Robt A. D. and Joshua, and myself, all at our usual avocations

Wm M [G?] gets out to the Rail Road but complains, at times of a numbness in his feet. (which don't look very well) Sally was born June '88 she is 4 1/2 years older than William (whose birth, thee has)
Thy letter just came, as I am sending this. I am glad thee likes it. After I have got through the History, I will send (separately) some little memorandums which, he left, of his different spells of sickness It seems he had 5 or 6 of them, before I knew him. It was not worth while to send stamps. I did not want that
[Lydia is all, well?] I have faith that our public troubles will come out right I admire the great dignity of the North no bluster nor gasconade but ready "to put in an oar" at the proper time I think people will be agreeably disappointed in Lincoln I voted for [[illegible]Everett, being our only chance in Maryland [illegible] like spring I shall write every few days affly Richard H. Townsend

Townsend

Gov. R. Yates,

My Dear Sir:

Enclosed please find a corrected statement of the Census of Ill. by counties, which I have rec'd from the Census Bureau. You will see that the aggregate differs somewhat from that contained in the statement sent Mr. Hurlbut some days ago. I suppose this to be complete, & were it not Sunday so that I cannot see the superintendent, I would apply to him for his official certificate to that effect. I suppose the discrepancy between this & the former statement has arisen from the fact that the former statement was not complete & from errors in computation. I do not know that you will

receive this in time to correct your congressional apportionment, in case any correction should be necessary.

The next Congress will be composed of members listed under the census of 1850; & it will not be till after the 4th of March 1863, that those listed on the census of 1860 will be entitled to seats. I mention this because of a rumor that some supposed Ill. could get four additional members into the next Congress. This is a mistake.

Yours truly

Lyman Trumbull

I have this morning obtained the certificate of the Superintendent Monday morning, Feb. 18--

Six proof copies were sent to Lincoln in Springfield prior to his departure for Washington. On the trip Lincoln used a parlor car made for him by William M. Kasson of Buffalo, New York.

I notice by the Ills. Journal of the 19th that you have kindly responded to the wishes of myself & other friends in the appointment of John R. Woods Esq to a Trusteeship in one of the Jacksonville asylums. I hereby tender you my sincere thanks therefor. I am quite certain that the ability & experience of Mr Woods will fully justify the choice. I see also the re-appointment of my partner E. G. Miner Esq. This I assure you is very gratifying to him being, as it is, an endorsement of his former official conduct, & a well deserved acknowledgement of faithful services to our party.

Will you get time to go to Washington? We will soon see whether Lincoln will be peacefully inaugurated or not. I wish things looked as well for us at W. as they do at Springfield under your administration.

Yours most truly,

John Moses

In reply to your enquiry in regard to the continuance of the survey I can only say that I do not expect there will be anything done in the field this season.

Yours of the 26th ult. came to hand last evening, forwarded from Springfield by Mr. Meek. In reply to your enquiry in regard to the continuance of the survey I can only say that I do not expect there will be anything done in the field this season. I shall devote myself to the publication of the report, and if it is necessary shall devote the balance of the appropriation to pay for lithographies &c. in bringing out the results of what has already been done. I shall return to Springfield in about a week.

I was much dissappointed

return must be made and I calculate much upon
