Grand Detour Aug 5th 1862 To his excelency Govenor Yates, sir One year ago this month in answer to the Presidents call for more troops my Brother Amos Bosworth Lt Col of the (34th) thirty fourth, Illinois regiment sacraficed all business prospects in answer to the call & in five weeks from the time he commenced recruiting (which [soon?] raised mainly by his exertions) they were in camp for duty & they received marching orders almost immediately upon their organization at camp Butler & left for Kentucky where he was in McCooks division of Gen - [Buels?] Army of whom you will hear I think a good report, as a good & efficient officer shrinking from no <hr /> harship or duty most of the bridges were built & obstructions that the Rebels placed in their way were removed under his direction & mainly by his Regiment after arriving at Nashvill feeling that his health & strength needed [recruiting?] & that he owed a duty to his family in arrangeing his business which his hasty departure prevented his doing before, he asked for twenty days furlough approved by all to General [Buel?] but his reply was that the [exigencies?] of the times would not permit the absence of so energetic an officer he then tendered his resignation with the sam answer the Army went on to Columbia where he directed the building of another bridge in an incredibly short time which [alow?] finished his [casthly?] labors still he kept on with his <hr /> regiment which he had commanded some time, to Savannah & there they left him to die Gen. McCook took the responsibility to send him home which he never reach alive, & I think I may truly say no one of Illinois volunteers sacraficied more even life for his country. Pardon this recital he was my only & much loved brother but it is not of that I would speak it is for his delicate wife & children & feeble Mother whom his life shielded from all trouble, but will now sadly need his protection, his commiscion dates from the fifteenth of August but he pay dated from the thirtyeth of September.
