Dear Sir. My apology for addressing you is this. I am a minister of the gospel and desire an apointment in the army as chaplain. I should be very grateful for your assistance in procuring the same. The most that I can say of myself is, that I am tolerably obscure, and am perhaps as unpopular as any poor minister would wish to be. This arises I think from the fact that I have not been a sympathiser with the dominant party in politics in this region. I am not a politician never having cast but two votes for president (and I am over forty years of age) but because I have been known to be

a Republican, I have had to endure an amount of prejudice you can scarcely conceive of. My desire is to do good but I feel that I can accomplish nothing here. I desire now to try what I can do in the army.

Although I have not been so fortunate as to make your acquaintance, yet I have had the pleasure of hearing you speak. I heard you make a speech in Chester in this State in 1854, and had the pleasure of casting my vote for you for a seat in Congress at the ensuing election. I was at that time pastor of the Baptist church in that place.

I refer you to our mutual friend Dr. D. Arter of this place. And to D L Philips of Anna. Yours truly. M.B Kelly

In the present excited state of the Public mind, knowing how entirely you must be engaged in matters of the most serious moment, I feel somewhat reluctant, to call your attention to a matter so trivial, as will the one I present, appear. But as it is one to us, living in this town of considerable importance, and as I have no other source than yourself by which I can reach the point, not being acquainted in the proper direction in this State, presuming upon our long and familiar acquaintance, I have determined to write you -

There is an effort being made here, to oust our present P.M., and substitute a Breckenridge Secessionist. I say what I know - [Beeding?] the present occupant was an old line Whig but at the last Presidential election voted for Douglass and is every way competent and acceptable to the community and could not be ousted if left to the vote of the Town & neighborhood - The man proposed to fill his place, [name] is a young man and cast his first Presidential vote, last election & for Breckenridge and is still of that party

Mason Illinois

April 25th 1861

To his excellency

Richard Yates

Govenor of Ills.

Since the nobel sons of old Effingham County have so valiently volenteered to defend the "Stars & Stripes" and especially, since the I.C.R.R. has been carrying Soldiers to Cairo, the cloven-foot of secession has
manifested itself right in our midst. Quite a number among us are at heart, the enemies of the Federal Government - and only want the power to enable them to turn the whole North into the hands of the enemies of this Government. There are in this village those who would, I verily believe, if they were not
afraid, lead on a band of secessionists from the South, and rejoice in seeing them subjugate us - and visit the Chains of Slavery on our necks. One of the old posts in the Democratic party has been heard to say that "the volenteers from this Co. were cowards, and that hoped they every one get what they deserved before they return". His wife has said that "She hoped to God the South would kill every one of them" - and his little son has frequently said the same thing - which certainly reflects the sentiments of the head of the family. This same old man has said within the last five days that he could command the force in three days to take the Town of Mason, and that Republicans had better mind how they talk about traitors.

These things he has said to his supposed confidential friends - He has not said them publicly. And it is my deliberate opinion that he speaks the sentiments of not less than from six to ten men within five miles of this place. And many more are of the same opinion with me. In Clay County I learn there are a good many secessionists who are clamorours in favor of the South. And farther south in Egypt, I have every reason to belive that there are many who will fight for the South in the event fighting has to be done on the border. And since our volenteers left here on Tuesday last, we have commenced making up a company of minute men - to be called the Mason minute guards - and a certain man in this vicinity has said as soon as the Company was made up and left here, he'd bring in a company to Rob & plunder ever "Black Republican" that was left behind. These things look hard: but they are true. In such a crisis as the present, these men are dangerous to the communities in which they live. In the present emergency, it seems to me that effective legislative means should be provided for the prompt surpression of every thing that would tend to encourage disloyalty in our midst, & invite the invasion our free territoy in Ills. by an armed body of rebbells. One enemy at home is more to be dreaded than many abroad. I fear thare are 10,000 traitors in Southern Ills. & may be many more. Yours in Confidence G. Wright

Wright

It has been Rumored here the Genl Paine of Monmouth might get the post of Brig. Genl. of the Ills troops. Knowing what we do of his Military Education and experience, and his character as a Man this appointment would Suit us, in this Section, well. I have been asked by some of my friends here to Recommend to you and to him, one of our Citizens, John H. Ewing, as one of his Staff, say Aid. Mr. Ewing is now some 30 years of age, comes of Revolutionary stock, has had some military training, has a cool clear head and a powerful physique, and is one of the boldest, and most fearless Riders I ever saw.

I cannot just now think of a man who would be more prompt and Efficient in any Emergency, and more faithful in the discharge of any duty which might be required of him.
