In 1886 the hopital began serving as a training school for nurses. The institute became the Kankakee State Hospital in 1910 after the abolishment of the Board of State Commissioners of Public Charities. The hospital operated under the Department of Public Welfare beginning in 1917 until the Department of Mental Health's establishment in 1961. In 1974, the hospital became a treatment center for developmentally disabled patients and all other patients were transferred to other hospitals. At that time the hospital was renamed the Samuel H. Billings inquired at once for weapons & personal effects of the prisoner; [expressing ?] himself as inexperienced in those [duties?], but supposed he was to examine & turn over to the government whatever he found of value. (He was acting Regt Q.M.) He took thirty six (36) dollars in Kentucky & Tennessee currency <hr /> and a quantity of "Confederate" paper, the amount of which I cannot state, not regarding it of value. He is best known for leading the successful Grierson's Raid during the Battle of Vicksburg in the spring of 1863. After the Civil War, Grierson remained in the Army, receiving an appointment to serve as commander of the 10th Cavalry, or the “Buffalo Soldiers, in 1866. He held several commands in the western United States including the District of the Indian Territory, the Department of Texas, the Department of Arizona, and the District of New Mexico.
