Within the next few days my Regiment will be divided into two equal parts, and will in all probability, remain divided during the campaign. We have a Regt of twelve hundred men, and in view of the numerous accidents to which the Cavalry are subjected, as well as their equal liability to disease with the other arms of the service---I am well satisfied that each six hundred men, of necessity require a Surgeon and Assistant Surgeon. You will recollect that in the first place I strongly urged Dr. Crain, for the post of Surgeon. The Dr has since passed the Board as Surgeon and I would now earnestly recommend that he be appointed as Surgeon of one of the two divisions. He has from the first given entire satisfaction to us all and indeed was our only Surgeon for the first month.

We have all become attached to the Dr. and feel that as he must take the position of first Surgeon in one of the divisions, he certainly should have a reasonable remuneration for his services. In making this request, I am actuated by a sense of duty and by the urgent request of the officers & members of my command.

Dear Sir
I have the pleasure of introducing to you the Bearer, my friend John McIlwain who is Major in Col Smiths Regt and who several of our citizens are trying their utmost to injure and displace from his honorable position by their traitorous and disunion acts for which they have not the least shadow of reason except mere selfishness to Mr McIlwain and traitorism to the Union. Permit me therefore to say to you that having known Mr. McIlwain for the last three years I would truly recommend him to you as being a man true to the Union and one who will perform his duty to the best possible advantage.

I remain yours truly
F Remann

I have the pleasure of introducing to you the Bearer, my friend John McIlwain who is Major in Col Smith's Regt and who several of our citizens are trying their utmost to injure and displace from his honorable position, by their traitorous and disunion acts, for which they have not the least shadow of reason, except mere selfishness to Mr McIlwain and traitorism to the Union.

Permit me therefore to say to you that having known Mr. McIlwain for the last three years I would truly recommend him to you as being a man true to the Union and one who will perform his duty to the best possible advantage.

I remain yours truly

Hon: R. Yates

Dear Sir

I have this day accompanied the volunteer company we have at last been able to organize in Grayville to this place, on their route to Springfield & whilst I cannot say much for the boy's piety I can truly say better fighting materials in the defense of the Union cannot be found.

Their Captain Up de Graff is a most excellent officer & will soon drill them into good soldiers. My son Charles E Spring while making great business sacrifices to his patriotism has been mainly instrumental in getting it up, only accepting the office of orderly sergeant to prevent jealousy among the democrats though deservedly popular with both parties. Knowing that he is fully competent to fulfill the arduous duties of that office I still cannot help feeling that he deserves something better & if you could promote him in the Commisary department for which his business habits so well qualify him

or in any other branch of the service he may wish to enter you will confer a great personal favor & may rest assured you will find him an active efficient & honest officer

Respectfully Yours truly

Sydney Spring

Hon: R. Yates

Septr 2nd 1861

My Dear Sir

I should have advised you sooner in regard to the Cavalry Company but for your Proclamation that all Companies would be recd. which rendered it apparently unnecessary to report to you whether or not I would get a Company in readiness at the required time.

I went to work on receipt of your letter to get the Company together and would probably have succeeded had I not thought it necessary - owing to the shortness of the time to get in readiness - to join with some persons at Grayville and Phillipstown which produced dissatisfaction in my own neighbourhood and resulted

in my defeat by a small majority at the Election of Officers. The Grayville and Phillipstown men by voting more men that had no intention of going to the war than the majority against me carried all the offices and are endeavoring to make out the Company at Grayville but with what success I am not apprised. If I make another attempt it will not be untill after Wheat is sowed. If the Grayville and Phillipstown party succeed they will have appropriated to their use about $10.00 of expense incured by me beside my time. This however is about in keeping with my fortunes in political matters for I will venture to say and I am of opinion that it is believed by my neighbors

Sept 2 1861
that of the three persons in my immediate vicinity who have been the recipient of Federal favor Viz Turney, Limgor and Brown the labor and sacrifise given by all of them for Political purposes does not equal that of my own. The fact is that while they were demanding money of the Republican Party for political use I was steadily footing whatever necessary expense for the Cause presented itself. I have taken but little pains to present my claims for the official favor and in that little I have been sent on one occasion by an insinuation that a plea of pecuniary necessity was fatal to an applicant for office under the present Administration. Believing that such a heartless sentiment does not find a response

in your bosom I desire to say to you that Bankruptcy and a consequent want of the necessaries of life look me full in the face. I have no reason to doubt but that if I had never had anything to do in political matters my situation in life would have been far different. In the beginning of the year 1856 I had attained to a prosperous business at this place. I did not think of anything but affluence during the remainder of my days. At that time I began to distribute Republican Documents and the same was met by threats of destruction to my business which only stimulated me to renewed exertion for the Rep cause. Finally giving up my business I threw my whole sole into the work making it my study and pursuit and my acquaintance being tolerably extensive in this and adjoining counties I made it my study and duty to provide every person with good political reading matter who I thought was at all susceptible of embibing true principles as also the providing of speakers [?c ?c] The result has been that many persons of Democratic faith who were once my warmest friends are now my bitterest enemies and availing themselves of a little circumstance with regard to a fugitive slave (which I believe I explained to you once) they have attatched the odium of Abolitionism on me and having sought in every way to break me down thinking that thereby they could break down the Rep Party in this vicinity have ruined my prospects for business pursuits in this vicinity.

You expressed to me while at Springfield in June last a purpose of giving me some position. Some place in the Army where business qualifications and industry are necessary would suit me. Anything you can do for me will be thankfully received and remembered.
Your sincere friend

The Grayville and Phillipstown men by voting more men that had no intention of going to the war than the majority against me carried all the offices & are indeavoring to make out the Company at Grayville but with what success I am not apprised. If I make another attempt it will not be untill after Wheat is sowed.

If the Grayville & Phillipstown party succeed they will have appropriated to their use about $10.00 of expense incured by me beside my time.

This however is about in keeping with my fortunes in political matters for I will venture to say & I am of opinion that it is believed by my neighbors

Sept 2 1861

that of the three persons in my immediate vicinity who have been the recipient of Federal favor viz. Turney, Limgor and Brown the labor and sacrifise given by all of them for Political purposes does not equal that of my own.

The fact is that while they were demanding money of the Republican Party for political use I was steadily footing whatever necessary expense - for the Cause - presented itself.

I have taken but little pains to present my claims for the official favor and in that little I have been met on one occasion by an insinuation that a plea of pecuniary necessity was fatal to an applicant for office under the present Administration.

Believing that such a heartless sentiment does not find a response

in your bosom I desire to say to you that Bankruptcy & a consequent want of the necessaries of life look me full in the face.

I have no reason to doubt but that if I had never had anything to do in political matters my situation in life would have been far different.

In the beginning of the year 1856 I had attained to a prosperous business at this place. I did not think of anything but affluence during the remainder of my days. At that time I began to distribute Republican Documents & the same was met by threats of destruction to my business, which only stimulated me to renewed exertion for the Rep. cause. Till finally giving up my business I threw my whole sole into the work making it my study & pursuit, and my acquaintance being tolerably extensive in

5th Sept 2 1861

this & adjoining counties I made it my study & duty to provide every person with good political reading matter who I thought was at all susceptible of embibing true principles and also the providing of speakers &c. &c.

The result has been that many persons of Democratic faith who were once my warmest friends are now my bitterest enemies and availing themselves of a little circumstance with regard to a fugitive slave (which I believe I explained to you once) they have attatched the odium of Abolitionism on me & having sought in every way to break me down thinking that thereby they could break down the Rep. Party in this vicinity have ruined my prospects for business pursuits in this vicinity.

You expressed to me while at Springfield in June last a purpose of giving me some position.

Some place in the Army where business qualifications & industry are necessary would suit me.

Anything you can do for me will be thankfully received and remembered.

Your sincere friend

My Dear Sir:

You will pardon me about being solicitous about hearing from the results of your communications, with the friends to whom you proposed writing. With the most rigid economy which I am compelled to practise, I find it will be absolutely impossible to continue housekeeping on my present means two mont[h]s longer. Seeking retirement as a necessity, with my great sorrow upon me, it would be to me the greatest conceivable pain, that I should have to rent this place, to assist me, in living. With the sum, with the amount

of which you are apprised. I cannot attempt to struggle through the coming winter, with the requirements, which the winter necessarily brings. All I desire to know is, what prospect, there is of a change, or if you have been advised of any, please inform me so that I may make my arrangements. I can assure you, it will add, another pang, to my afflictions, if I have to give up for want of means to keep it up, my present situation. If so, my pride would not allow me to remain in a land, under so many obligations to my noble husband. I would go, with my son, where I could live retired & at less expense, far distant from here. Without hesitation in case of nothing being done, I shall proceed in a few weeks, to dispose of all my personal effects, which in the future will not be required. Please write me if you have heard any thing.

[continued on page 1 written sideways in margin]

Hon. L. Swett:

[continued on page 1 written sideways in margin]

believe me

most respectfully

Mary Lincoln.
