National Guard Coal miners Mining industry Miners African Americans Description An account of the resource In September 1898 representatives of the United Mine Workers of America stopped a railroad car in Virden, Illinois, filled with potential African American strikebreakers. The train continued on to Springfield after the union members informed them of the strike between the members and the Chicago-Virden Coal Company. On October 12, 1898, a second train of African American strikebreakers from Birmingham, Alabama, and security guards arrived in Virden. The security guards opened fire when striking miners attempted to surround the train at the entrance to the mining facility. The train departed Virden after twenty minutes of gunfire and headed for Springfield. By the end of the conflict four security guards and seven striking miners were killed and 30 people were wounded. The mine owners accepted unionization at the mine in November 1898 and the mine remained segregated for many years after. Fifer, who later became the governor of Illinois, and Gertrude Lewis Fifer.  Florence was active in family and children’s causes, and she established the Mother’s Club (a precursor to the P.T.A.) and the Lucy Orme Morgan Home for dependent girls.  She also worked with the Booker T. Washington Home for Negro children and the McLean County Tuberculosis Association.  She lobbied for the establishment of Fairview Sanatorium, which was dedicated in Bloomington in 1919. In 1924, after women’s suffrage was passed, Florence was encouraged to run for the State Senate.  She ran as a Republican and won, under the slogan “Law enforcement, Christian citizenship and reduction of taxes”.  Her bills included real estate tax payments in two installments, foster homes for welfare children, registration and standards for public health nurses, regulation of dance halls by county supervisors, control of state parks by the Department of Public Works and Buildings and the adoption of the state song, “Illinois”.  She was re-elected for a second term in 1929. After her terms in legislative office ended she chaired the McLean County Emergency Relief Commission, which distributed aid during the Depression.  She also was the founder and president of the McLean County League of Women Voters, and continued to be a persistent lobbyist, working for permanent voter registration, the Act for Aid to Dependent Children and revised adoption laws. A life-long Unitarian, Bohrer served as president of the board of her church and director of the American Unitarian Association. She received many awards and citations, including the Bloomington Community Service Award (1934), the Illinois Welfare Association Citation (1945) and the Distinguished Service Award from Southern Illinois University (1956). House of Representatives Description An account of the resource Richard Yates, Jr., the son of Governor Richard Yates, Sr., was elected Governor of Illinois in 1901. Governor Yates, Jr. worked to secure groundbreaking child labor legislation in Illinois but failed to attack political corruption. He was not reelected for a second term. After serving on the state public utilities commission and as assistant attorney general, he was elected to Congress in 1918 and served in that body until 1933. Working with his daughter, Catherine Yates Pickering, he wrote a biography of his father which was eventually published in 1966: Richard Yates: Civil War Governor. Richard Yates, Jr. died in 1936 and was buried in Diamond Grove Cemetery in Jacksonville, Illinois, the hometown and burial place of his father. Title A name given to the resource Monticello College Collection Subject The topic of the resource Women's colleges Universities and colleges Monticello College Monticello Female Seminary Haskell, Harriet, 1835-1907 Illinois--Godfrey Godfrey, Benjamin, 1794-1862 Description An account of the resource Monticello College first began as the Monticello Female Seminary in 1838. Founded by Captain Benjamin Godfrey to provide education for women, the school offered two years of classes for attendees based on the idea that “if you educate a man you educate an individual; educate a woman and you educate a whole family.” Godfrey selected Reverend Theron Baldwin to serve as the first head of the Monticello Female Seminary. In 1867 Harriet Haskell became principal, a position she held until her death in 1907.  On November 4, 1888, a fire broke out in the building and consumed the entire structure. Ms. Haskell and the school's Board of Trustees successfully fundraised for a new building and rebuilt the school in two years. The school's leadership made the decision to close the school in 1970 with the final class graduating in 1971. Lewis and Clark Community College completed the purchase of the Monticello College campus in 1972.
