Hon R. Yates

My Dear Sir; I need not introduce myself to you as I presume you will recolect me as I was Pastor in West [Charge?] M. E. Church Jacksonville for two years having left there near [ten?] years since

The Pike Co Company of Second Cavalry Regiment of Ills Volunteers have unanimously requested me to apply for the Caplaincy in their Regiment

If your excellency has the appointing of the Chaplains and should feel disposed to give me the post I hope I shall not disgrace either the cause of my country or my holy profession

If the Col has the appointment I

will be much obliged to get his address also for any favor from you in regard to this matter I am moved in this matter by a sence of duty I am aware that the duties of a faithful Chaplain are arduous

Yours

Fraternally

J. R. Locke
