To His Excellency

Richard Yates

Springfield

Ills

Governor

At the request of the officers and men of the 22d Regt Ills Inf I return to you the flags presented to the Regt something more than a year ago They are faded from exposure torn by the minds of Heaven and riddled by the bullets of misguided Rebels on the bloody fields of Chickamauga, Chattanooga Mission Ridge Resaca, Brown's Mills & other places, but thank God they have never been captured, or disgraced Many brave men have fallen whilst fighting under them and I believe I am safe in saying that every man who ever carried them in battle has been either killed or wounded

Very Respectfully

Your Obt Servant

F Swanwick

Late Lt Col Com of 22d Ill Inf
