Dear Sir

I have the pleasure of introducing to you the Bearer, my friend John McIlwain who is Major in Col Smith's Regt and who several of our citizens are trying their utmost to injure and displace from his honorable position, by their traitorous and disunion acts, for which they have not the least shadow of reason, except mere selfishness to Mr McIlwain and traitorism to the Union.

Permit me therefore to say to you that having known Mr. McIlwain for the last three years I would truly recommend him to you as being a man true to the Union and one who will perform his duty to the best possible advantage.

I remain yours truly

F. Remann
