The enlisted men at muster recd one months advance pay & 1st Installment of bounty but have recd no pay since. And they are complaining to me daily that their families are suffering.

The officers except a few who have had

leave of absence or been on detached duty have not had any pay. They spent much money in recruiting the Regiment and some of them are in the field without a cent of money in their pocket.

Any assistance you Excellency can give will be gratefully received & kindly remembered.

One Batt remains at Alton and two have gone up Missouri River – one at St Joseph & one at Glascow. This separation of the Regmt makes 3 surgeons almost a necessity. I sincerely hope you may be able to send us another.

I regret to trouble you but justice to my command require it.

I should prefer that this communication remains with yourself.

Yours very respectfully John L. Beveridge Col &c
