Gov Yates.

Dear Sir; I am requested by James Carpenter, Co "C" 101st Ills Reg Vol " to aks your aid if consistently it can be given in procurring his discharge from the service, for the following reasons,

1st He has been in the service two years.

2nd He has lost two and his only brothers in the service.

3rd He has a very sick mother, lingering with disease, who is dependent upon him for support.

4th He is to some extent disabled by a wound in the left hand.

5th Because in asking a discharge he (as I believe) is not seeking to get rid of the duties of a soldier, out of preference, but because of the circumstances above named-

Yours TC-
