Memphis August 21st 1864
His Excellency Governor Yates Springfield Ills
Sir - Rebels in heavy force suprised & entered the city this morning about 4 a.m. Ransacked the Stables - Hotels & Headquarters.- Had a jolly good time generally & retired. Our forces followed & are fighting theirs with good success. Genl Washburne says we can hold the city. Col. Starr 6th Ills Cavalry & Lieut Col 137th Ills Inftry - severely wounded. Will write particulars tomorrow.
