Hon Richard Yates

Dr Sir

We recd a letter yesterday from Leiut S.S. Smith Cheeneys Battery - 4th division 15th army Corps Ills Vol -

It has been reported that he was Captured and then killed while the Rebels was takeing him off the field. He writes that he is a prisoner at Macon Ga. in Good health.

Leiut Smith is a Brother-in-Law of mine and I feel a good deal of interest in his welfare and thinking that there may be other arrangements made in the Battery. I concluded to apprise you immediately of the "glorious Cheerful news to us" that he is still living -

Yours Very Respectfully

E Woodruff
