After receiving yours of 20th Augt I had determined to exert myself to fill up my old Regt in order that I might again go into the field, but I have just learned that you have promoted J M Cribs to the position which I was seeking to again occupy if it is true I of course shall feel no interest in recruiting for that Regt (87th Ills)

I shall be in Springfield in a few days and would be pleased to see you as well as some other of our friends.
