Resolution passed at a public meeting held in Preston on the 4th of May, 1865.

Resolved, That the inhabitants of Preston, in public meeting assembled, do hereby express their deep sorrow and indignation at the atrocious assassination of Abraham Lincoln, President of the United States, and the dastardly attempt about the same hour on the life of Mr. Secretary Seward, Secretary of State. They desire to express their profound sympathy with Mrs. Lincoln in this mournful affliction, and with the American government and people in the loss, at such a crisis, of one so recently elected a second time to the office of President. In the state of affairs consequent upon the recent successes of the federal arms, the kindly feeling and the evident anxiety to smooth the way to the removal of animosities displayed by President Lincoln in the hour of triumph, render his removal, in the opinion of this meeting, a calamity not only to America, but to Europe.
