Naples, May 5, 1865.

Illustrious Sir: The common council, which has met this morning in an extraordinary sitting, has unanimously voted the following address, which you, illustrious sir, will have the kindness to transmit to your government:

“The municipality of Naples, full of horror for the execrable crime which has deprived the great American nation of its magnanimous President, Abraham Lincoln, express to his successor, who represents that generous people, the profound grief which struck us on the news of that great calamity, and wish that the noble cause to which Lincoln’s life was consecrated, and for which it was lost, will soon obtain the full triumph, which will be the greatest conquest of modern civilization.”

Accept, illustrious sir, the testimonies of my esteem.

F. DE SUROVA,
Mayor.

The Consul of the United States at Naples.
