Hon Richard Yates
Dear Sir
Your letter asking me to speak for you at Virginia in Cass Co. on Saturday next just came. I would cheerfully do so, but it is impossible. I am to speak to a large mass meeting at Washington in Tazwelle Co Friday afternoon, and after that it will be absolutely impossible to reach Virginia in time for the meeting there.
I have already agreed to go to Tazwell once and failed when the time arrived I assured them I would be present this time, and they have taken great pains to get a crowd Call on me whenever, on any other occasion, I can serve you.
