Description

The grave of James A. B. Butterfield stands in Riverside Cemetery at Oregon, Illinois. Butterfield served as a corporal in the Second Illinois Cavalry and died on May 6, 1865, from injures suffered at the explosion of the SS Sultana, the largest maritime disaster in American history.

On verso: "To a Fallen Patriot. James A. B. Butterfield Perished on the Sultana May 6, 1865 aged 30 years, 9 months, 23 days[.]"
