Dr Sir
My son Wm. H. Ranstead has now got the consent of Hon W. H. Leman to attach his Battalion of Sharp Shooters to his Brigade and also of the Secretary of War, with the Governors request. I wish you would examine the papers and urge the Gov to give his sanction in the matter. You know how the case has stood with him, and I wish you to make this a personal thing with you, and give him some reward for what he has done. I leave the matter with you knowing that you will do what is right in the matter.
