Sir:

Being informed that the Post of Commandant of Camp Butler is soon to be vacant, I respectfully apply for the appointment to fill such vacancy.

I have no doubt that I shall be fully able to redeem the promises of my friends, whose recommendation is herewith submitted. If I felt that the duties of that office could not be performed by me, to your entire satisfaction, this conviction alone would deter me from making the application.
