On verso: "This photograph dated July 4, 1879, was in the effects of J. M. Staley, a photographer who was in business in Clear Lake, South Dakota, from 1895 to ca. 1950. I suspect that the "C. G. Slocumb" was his maternal grandfather who was in the construction business around Abington, Ill., for a number of years. Alan R. Wollworth, Museum Curator, Minnesota Historical Society."
