Paducah Ky Janry 29th 1862

To His Excellency

Gov Yates

Sir,

Capt Davis is about to start to Springfield for the purpose of collecting his claim, and also for the further object of seeing if your Excellency can give him a position somewhere in the service suitable to his merit. He has been with me several months and I have found him to be an officer of most superior attainments.

Having been a Cavalry Officer of fifteen years experience he would naturally prefer some position in that branch of the public service. If you Excellency cannot give him a position in that branch I would respectfully urge the propriety of placing him somewhere in the artillery Regiments, which are being formed. His military talents are so marked, that I feel satisfied that he would grace any position which Your Excellency might assign him.
