July The 17th 1862 Camp Near Corinth Army of the Miss

To your excellency; the Auditor of the State of Illinois.

Dear Uncle

I take the liberty to ask a favor of you. I have been in the U. S. service for one year, I belong to the 11th Mo. Regiment.

I enlisted in Capt [Mieure's?] Co, and have since been with that Company. I would be a thousand times obliged to you, if you can get me a position in a company

or regiment, that will be forming there, under the late call from the President, if you can get me the position of first or second Lieutenant, or sergeant major; either of those offices, I think I am comitant now to fill.

If you will grant me this request, I will feel that I owe you a life time indebtedness.

I will close hoping to hear from you soon, and believe me ever as before your most obedient Servant

John C Collins
