Head Quarters Dist. of the Miss.

Columbus, Ky. July 30th 1862

His Excellency,

Richd Yates.

Governor of Illinois.

I have just returned from an expedition up the Ohio River to Henderson, Ky., and vicinity where I have been for the last twelve days operating against the rebels in conjunction with troops from Cairo, Capt Pennock of the Navy, and the Indiana troops with Genl. Love, etc.

I had intended ere this, to have visited Springfield, for the purpose of seeing you in relation to One of the new Regts. so kindly tendered me some time since, and would have done so had I not been ordered off.

My reports to the end of the month will detain me here three or four days longer, but I shall endeavor to visit your Excellency at Springfield by first of next week.

I feared from my silence, and absence, you might deem me careless and neglectful.

With very great regard believe me

Respectfully

Your Obt Servt
