Friend Pope called upon me yesterday to consult on matters pertaining to our State fall campaign - I regret I was not earlier posted as to your wishes for in order to bring about certain results in our congressional district a little figuring has been done which may conflict with the general issue. Still I think it can in time be all made right. How are the Congressmen in the northern districts on the question? They to some extent give form and direction to all of the Smaller Wheels Jones of Chicago as U S Marshal and all of the Collectors & Assesors to be appointed, form a hard combination to be Surmounted unless we spread our tricks early and get them in the right direction - I advised Pope to request you to make a trip up into this Section during the encampment of the troops here - and See

our people - No man in the State has their affection and confidence equal to you. and if the question of your election could be placed directly before them you could Sweep the State. The great danger lies in the Self interests to be [illegible] - To counter act they make it a point to come up here - I will quietly invite here Some of the editors and figures in this Section to meet you It can all be done Sub Rosa and I believe great could be accomplished If you conclude to make the trip give me a few days notice - I would like very much to entertain in my humble way [Mort Cossell?] also
