To his

Excellency Richd Yates

Govenor Ills

Springfield

Dr Sir:

I write you for the purpose of calling your attention to the organization of the new Regt here (Col Hardy) and to urge my claims to the position of Quarter Master of the same.

Gov I am sure that I am the choice of a majority of the Capts and the men of the Regt and as to my loyalty qualifications & responcibility I will refer you to D. L. Phillips Esq, Marshal

for the Southern District & can if necessary give you the best referance in the Southern part of the State: I am aware that some of the blood hound poletitians are making an effort to have the Col reccoment an other person for the place.

In leaving my business I make a pecuniary sacrifice but was induced to go from the best of motives and now I dislike to be defeated, by a sett of tricksters and men who on account of their secession proclivities are trying to beat me. If you will onely defer the appoint

ment until you assertain my claims, I am sure of the office.

You will confer a greate favor by speaking to Mr Phillips con serning me.

Yours Respy

Jerome B. Chapman
