Office of the Circuit Clerk & Recorder of Cook County.

Chicago Dec 4 1862

Dear Governor.

Permit me to introduce my Particular friend James E. Aiken Esq. of the old Dry Good House of Harmon Aiken & Gale of our City. Mr. A thinks of going south and if Expedient will use some money in the Purchase of Cotton. I have suggested to him before starting, to get a Letter from Gov Yates Endorsing him. The best Evidence I can give you of Mr Aikens loyalty is to Assure you that he is one of our working Republicans. Will you oblige me by giving him a Letter that will pass him wherever it is proper for a Civillian to pass.

Yours Very Respectfully

Wm. L. Church
