ILLINOIS JOY

In the heartland of our nation lies our beautiful Prairie State, On her pioneer foundation she helped make our country great. Midwestern hospitality is what she's noted for. We're proud of all the famous shrines, and all her Lincoln lore.----

Chorus

Illinois - What joy each season brings, In Illinois, when violets bloom in Spring, In Illinois - this is where you'll find me. Her fields of gold are thrilling to behold. At harvest time in autumn in God's country. Summer nights----

when daylight lingers on, we love to hear the orchestrated song, the katydids sing in the old oak trees. Then it looks like paradise when winters' snow and ice descends upon the Illinois prairie.----

Early Grigsby was Cashier and Executive Officer of the Farmers State Bank of Pittsfield from 1908-1975, and Helen Grigsby was a devoted member of the Board of Trustees of the University of Illinois for 18 years from 1920-1932 and 1940-1946; and she was organist for the Congregational Church in Pittsfield for 35 years.

Frank and Charlotte Roberts were the founders of Standard Mutual Insurance Company in 1921, building the company to its prominence within the insurance industry until 1953 when Mark took over as President; and Mark, Jr. now carries on as Executive Vice President from November 4, 1981 to date.

Then it looks like paradise when winters' snow and ice descends upon the Illinois prairie.----

rich with fruit ful loam, Our rivers sing-ing as they roam, The hap-pi

passed be-neath the rod Thy years employ! Grant that their
faith be just i-fied In us for whom they fought and died; Their love for
The our lasting pride And hope, for Ill - i-nois.

3. Our father's God put forth Thy might; Thru Thee may
we de-fend the right, The wrong de-stroy Lead us a-
far from greed and lust, Teach us our duty, make us just; In Thee our
best, our on-ly trust Our hope, for Ill - i -nois.

4. Great Lord, Thy law hath made us free And all our
Free-dom rests on Thee, Our stay and buoy We give Thee
praise for banish'd fears, For right-ed e-vils, con-trite tears; Keep steadfast
to her stain-less years Our hope, our Ill -i- nois.

THE STATE SONG

'BY ACT of the Fifty-fourth General Assembly the song "ILLINOIS" became the official State song. The bill was introduced in the Senate by Senator Florence Fifer Boher, daughter of the late Governor Joseph W. Fifer and the first woman to serve as member of the Illinois Senate. The bill passed both houses without opposition and became law by the executive signature.

"Illinois" had long been he State song, but it had been given no official recognition prior to the passage of the bill. The song was written by Charles H. Chamberlin some time between 1890 and 1894, in connection with plans for securing the World's Columbiam Exposition for Chicago. Many states were attempting to secure the exposition, Illinois making strong efforts herself with the able assistance of U.S. Senator Shelby M Cullom and U.S. Senator John M. Palmer. Col. O.B. Knight, a friend of Mr. Chamberlin, in the meantime, was singing throughout Illinois and Washington, D.C. and so the song was writ-ten primarily for him to sing. The lyric was composed by Mr. Chamberlin, but the music had been written by Archibald Johnston in 1870 with another lyric by Charles Mackay. In its original form the name of the song was "Baby Mine," under which the title it won great popularity in the 70's.
