Dear Sir

The writer having recently effected his escape from the Rebel lines with a view to contributing his efforts toward the solution of the terrible contest now waging in our Country, finds that he cannot be recieved into the U.S. service as a recruit in consequence of the scars of some blisters applied some months since during an attack Pneumonia.

He feels confident that he would be able to endure the exposure of a life in camp as well as most men.

This, therefore, is to bespeak your aid in getting him into the army in some capacity, and the reasons with which he would back his suit

are:- that he has left his family in Georgia, with the hope of fighting for their deliverance. He has abandoned all his property, amounting to little more than $20,000 and the Rebel confiscation has been applied to him are this - probably - Gen'l Grant refuses to admit civillians within his lines, and, unless the writer may get some position in that Army the prospect is that, owing to his inability to be on the ground when our Army moves from Chattanooga, his family may suffer privations and Rebel persecution which might be prevented were he at hand to deliver and remove them when the opportunity presents.

Another great incentive is that I may be able to assist my Union friends in Whitfield, Gordon, Murray Caloosa and Walker Counties, Geo. in establishing their loyalty, for I believe there is no man in that section who

is so well acquainted with the Union men as myself. I am willing to dispense with Bounty, take a privates position and do anything or everything that his within the duty of a Soldier. I wish you to understand that I am not "beging for a commission," notwithstanding the preference one naturally would have for a positive involving least hardship and exposure. If you cannot assist me in getting into the Army I have to request that you will recommend me to Gen'l Grant for some office work at Chattanooga in some one of the departments.

I was raised in Cayuga Co N.Y. Moved to Ill's in /58 residing at West Urbana Champaign Co untill the spring of 1860 when I moved to Dalton, Georgia, where I have lived true to my Country, suffering arrest, imprisonment and persecution by the mob until Genl Burnside's advance into East Tenn. when

I was relieved. In case you are disposed to assist me, I can furnish recommendations from any person you may designate in Champaign Co or in Cayuga Co N.Y.

Sir:
Sec. 14, of the new Post Office Law, reads thus: - "that the (illegible) advertisement for the proposals to carry the mails of the United States shall be published hereafter for a period of six weeks, in one or more, but not to exceed five Newspapers, printed in the State or Territory where the mail service is to be performed, one of which shall be printed at the seat of government of Such State or Territory."
This advertisement will be worth about six or eight-Hundred dollars, and I think the Postmaster General has the disposal of the advertisement and assignment of newspapers in which it appears. Of course not less than five papers will be used for Illinois. Springfield Journal will be one of course, leaving four papers in other portions of the State. The "Aurora Beacon" is published at Aurora, Illinois.
How did you like the appearance and general make-up of the thousand or more of men and women, boys and girls, in attendance upon our Fourth of July Ball, in our new $80,000 Town Hall! Seriously, we should have been glad to have seen you on that occasion, but it was a little too much for us to expect you to ride twenty-four miles after the fatigues of such a very hot day, and were not much disappointed in your not coming. We had a splendid time here and "[Dead Souls?]" of people. Could not see you at Elgin for I got mixed up in our own celebration, contrary to my desires, and could not get away. Was in Chicago the next day, and designed to have seen you - did call, but you were out - and afterwards got mixed up with some pretty women and went with them to a little banquet - up at Evanston - therefore I did not see you.
I send you [Seward's?] oration. Our Committee printed 3,000 for circulation

among the people. What has become of yours? Would like to print it in my paper if there is no objection on your part; or at least a portion. I hope that you fetched that
Elgin community on you "side to stay and for keeps." for heretofore they have not been on your side much. The Elgin Chronicle pitched into you a little, though that was to have been expected, in view of its Copperhead propensities. It was well for you to go to Elgin on the (illegible) and I am glad you did.

Dear Governor:-

I suppose it is certain that we have carried both branches of the Legislature & that you can with some certainty calculate who are your friends among those who make the majority. That other candidates for the Senate are making their appearance you probably know, and before the time arrives for the election, there will form combinations against you. Against all opposition you must be prepared. Do not leave a stone unturned, or our honorable expections untried thus will secure success. I fear that you will have opposition from persons that have strongly professed to be friendly and also from some who are under obligation to support you. My chance for observation to any great extent is limited, and therefore shrink from sounding any note of alarm; but are you certain that all of the holdover Senators are for you? I think you told me once they were. Our Mr. Allen is all right; but how is it with Ward? Now, I have no right to create any distrust in your mind of him, and do not desire to; I only want you to be certain and have him fixed up if he is not already. I believe him to be an honorable man and a clever, high minded gentleman and if he is pledged to you he will doubtless fulfill his promise. I was told in Chicago on Thursday last that he was against you, but possibly there was a mistake. Is there any truth in the rumor that Col. Bob Ingarsol's friends contimplate a raid in his favor in that direction? I have been told that there is an idea of this kind afloat; but it does not seem to me to be formidable,

except that it may create confusion. Is there any truth in that other story that Oglesby will be a candidate? You have doubtless heard it often and know the extent of it. There are those who would urge this thing, & if Dick is not proof against the hope, it is possible that a strong combination can be made with him. Those who are opposed to you will try everything & everybody, from Oglesby to Logan, Palmer & Ingarsol. You must be prepared against the possible contingency that some of our folks will not go into the caucus, or be bound by its decision. And right here let me ask how is it with Wash Bushnell of LaSalle. He is a good man and will stand up to his word, but he can be as ugly as the Devil if he takes the notion. Your friends in Woodford & LaSalle doubtless put the ring in his nose before the election, but if you have not and others not, you had better have him seen by some good stout friend.

You must excuse me, Governor, for what may appear to you as "simple minded zeal" in this matter. I want to see you get through. I know that there is likely to be combinations against it; and that many things may be said to accomplish your defeat; Do not "trust to luck" in any one particular where it can be avoided, but take time & circumstances by the fortap and smoke the opposition out of your track. Do not trust too implicitly in the magnanimity and honesty of men. There are a heap of them that have been diping their crust in your molasses dish within the last four years, who are ready to sell out for a better bid. They may not get a chance, & I trust you have got the bars put up in such a way that they will not; but when I hear men who have been professing strong friendship for you, and who have partaken largely of your confidence and used you to advance their interests, magnifying the only argument that can be used by your enemies, it makes me the more anxious that you be on the guard and strive unremittingly for certain success.

I was in Chicago yesterday. Went ther upon an invitation by telegraph & when I got there found that it was hoped that I would help make up the combination against you. My paper of this week went to Chicago by the same train that I did. It told the tale that I was not wanted. So I was not invited to the meeting held yesterday, by the opposition. Washburn once went back upon a young but quite prominent Lawyer in Chicago, but Jones was green enough to let him into the ring and from him I get the most that I learned. Of him I will tell you some other time. Logan is a full fledged Candidate---this I know & his friends will make the bigest show they are capable of making. There are a number in Chicago who feel a new-born zeal in his behalf. The Journal boys will be for him, but I do not think they will say so in their paper, unless some of your friends attack Logan in some way. There were a number of stories afloat yesterday charging that your friends had said harsh, mean things of Logan & I think these stories [somed?] up to Logan by various slinks have determined him to be a candidate. Washburn knows well how to set these things [agoing?] & he has a lot of [cuses] on his staff that know how to do these things. The Tribune will be neutral

with strong proclivities to go for the winning man. Col. Loomis will tell you his impressions about that establishment. I called upon Logan upon the urgent solicitation of Charley Wilson. [Kyrkendall?] talked about Logans being a candidate in his presence, and he will be back in Chicago to look after the interests of the combination in a week or so. [Dove?] L. Phillipps was laying around looking as weak as a veritable Uriah Heeps. I hope he is for you, but you know best.

I write in haste. If I see anything worth wright will report. Of course you will put forth your best efforts. Do not let them fool you.

Dear Governor

Do you not think it would be well to let Fuller be the Speaker without making any opposition to him on the part of your friends. I think Randalls vote (of DeKalb) will be controlled by Fuller and perhaps one or two others in the North. From my stand-point I think it would not be best to make war upon him, especially if there is any probability that he will go for you. I think I heard Mort C. & Pitt R say that he must be beaten. If there is any doubt about him, I think that he can be made to go for you by your friends in this district; first by treating him well and then demanding that he work with the rest. If you think best I will start his name in the Beacon for Speaker and go to work to get him through. There are several members that are strongly for him (Hopkins of Grundy, for instance) who are for you, but their ardor may be cooled if you or your especial friends go against him.

I send you an article from Haines Legal Advisor just published. You will see that he is for Washburn. I think the member from Lake will go with him. I would like to take a rip at Haines over this article as in connection with what he said to you about the resolution of the Second Dis Congressional Convention, and also the letter that you gave, recommending him for nomination to the Legislature over Bladget. If you think that it will not do more hurt than good, I will make the drive, and I think we can stamp him with a mark that he will carry for life. One of the silliest things you ever did was that of giving him a letter at all. All the enemies you have in Lake was made by it, and this article shows that he never was for you. Bladget is the only man

in Lake that has any brains---that is to say he is the best man in the county. An acquaintance of mine that sleeps in Haines office in Chicago tells me that it is a kind of Head-quarters for consultation with those in Washburns interest. The same friend writes me that he thinks that they have some encouragement from some members in [Ingersols?] Con. Dis. that one of the proprietors of the Peoria Transcript desires Washburn's election. That John M Bryant of Princeton, will be drawn to the support of Washburn if possible, and that through him they hope to control one or more members. You of course have looked this ground all over, and know what to hope and what to fear.

Will you write me what you think about the Fuller and Haines matters and also how the question looks as to final result. Will Palmer be a candidate. I see that the Bellville paper is out for him.

Yours,

He thinks some of the members (Hopkins for instance) who are your supporters are for him. If you think proper, he will come out for him in the Beacon for the position. He thinks this will get Fuller in your favor & that he can controll the vote of some of the members. Encloses an article from Haines paper in Washburne's favor. If you think it practicable he would like to make a drive at it, in connection with a letter which you wrote recommending him over Bladgett &c

Is advised by a friend that Haine's office is in Head Quarters for Washburn men &c

                <text>
Aurora Dec. 14th 1864.

Yours,

Geo S. Bangs

Bangs George S.

Aurora Dec 14th 1864

Would it not be well to let Fuller have the Speakership & to get your friends to support him as such.
