He was paroled as were the other wounded, and returned to our lines. They were not paroled singly but all signed the same papers, - one of which was retained by the rebels, while the other, it is supposed was sent to the proper officer of the U. S. army. Thus George has nothing to show his actual relation to the army. He is now at home on a furlough requiring him to report at Nashvill Tenn. My object in writing, is to ask of you the favor, if in your power, to arrange with the proper authorities, that the paroled Illinois soldiers may report at the parole camp nearest their several homes. To be with, or near their families, while unable to take an active part in the war, would be a privilege to many of the soldiers without any prejudice to the public service. <hr /> To a young man from Indiana, furloughed at the same time as my son, who had been captured on an other occasion and paroled singly, Gen. Granger granted permission to report to the parole camp in Indiana. Why should not the same privilege be granted to Illinois soldiers? In the course of his generally-vituperative remarks on the President and especially Governor Yates, he stated in substance that of the $50,000 voted for the soldiers, and placed in the Governor's hands to disburse, only one thousand went to the soldiers, nine thousand in steamboat excursions, and the remaining $40,000 was unaccounted for by the Governor whom he sneeringly called the soldier's friend. Believing this to be untrue, yet unable to reply by facts, I wrote to Governor Yates for an explanation, so that I might refute the charge. I received the following satisfactory reply, which I send to you for publication. EXECUTIVE DEPARTMENT, Springfield, Nov 10, 1863. Sir: Your letter of the 28:h of October, was handed to me yesterday; it would have been answered before if I had been at home. It is impossible for me to give you at present, the items for which the $50,000 appropriation was expended but will refer you to the report which I made to the Legislature, showing how the funds were disposed of The fact that not a single item was objected to, is sufficient to refute the ridiculous charge you speak of. Yates' report to the legislature, and show us by the Governor's own figures that Col. Morrison has charged him with anything that is "untrue," it will be more to the point. A professed lawyer, he confesses in the above that he knows nothing of what he attempts to deny, while there is not an intelligent boy of eighteen years in this country, but had, months ago read Yates' report to the legislature, which, in black and white, over his own signature, tells the world that of the $50,000 voted by the Illinois legislature, for the purpose of relieving the wants and distresses of the sick and wounded soldiers of Illinois, he, Dick Yates -"The soldiers' friend" - applied $40 000 to the payment of himself and his strikers, and of the remaining $10,000 all but less than $2,000 was paid for steamboat excursions. It is late in the day for any man to deny that Dick Yates swindled the poor soldiers out of $48,000 and upwards. Forgive me in doing this for necessity compels me to urge on But my object in writing to your Excellency this time is to make a Statement of a certain fact that has occurred here, please bear with me. There is a certain Lieut J.A. Fife here that has recently been transfered to the 1st Bat Inalid Corps (formily of the 75th Ill Vol) I understand this to be an honerable Corp, and none but those who merit it can obtain to a position in it <hr /> Now this same J. A. Fife is a swindler and owes me for my property which by his fair speech and oily tounge he got from me with his promise to pay upon the word and honor of a gentleman. Now he can atain to an honorable position by fals representation and Chicanery; can strut with a Lieut' salary and cheat and defraud a comon soldier, who gets his hard tack and no support for his children, can toil on for his thirteen Dollars per month and no recourse whatsoever. "Of consistency thou art a jewell," "Of judgment thou ard fled to bruitish beasts and men have lost reason" Smothed tounged, oily words, walking puppet shows; so goes the world; all right the bigger the rascal the more leniency he gets and the more favors he receives; To the above Statement I get as good men as the state afords to endorse the fact. But enough of this. <hr /> In trying to serve my Country I have lost my health I do not begrudge it I can lay down my life if necessary for the preservation of our Glorious and Benign Government anything that my Country requires of me, but I cannot see my family suffer for the Common necessaries of life I could loose a thousand lives if I had them in the defence of our beloved land yet my duty to my family first and above all except to my God. This will be the last I shall write your Excellency in regard to this matter and will leave the subject with you. You I presume are placed beyond the reach of want and may never need the assistance of Friends God grant you may never need them.
