<text>The Stuart-Hall family descends from Robert and Hannah Stuart. Robert, a Presbyterian minister and professor of languages at Transylvania University, married Hannah Todd, the aunt of Mary Todd Lincoln and Elizabeth Edwards. Robert and Hannah's son, John Todd Stuart, came to Illinois in 1828 after studying the law and immediately set up practice in Springfield. He fought in the Black Hawk War as a major in the battalion in which Abraham Lincoln had commanded a company. He served in the House of Representative from 1832-1836 serving with Lincoln. When Lincoln passed the bar, he practiced with Stuart until 1841. Stuart was elected to Congress, in 1838 defeating Stephen A. Douglas. After serving two terms, he went back into practice with Benjamin Edwards, but was then elected to the U.S. Senate in 1848, serving one term from 1848-1852. After being elected to the U.S. House in 1862 and serving one term, he returned to the practice of law with Edwards. In 1858, his son-in-law, Christopher C. Brown joined the firm. John T. Stuart also served as president of the Springfield City Railway Company, president of the Springfield Watch Company, president of the Betty Stuart Board of Trustees and Chairman of the Executive Committee of the National Lincoln Monument Association.

Stuart married Mary Virginia Nash of Jacksonville, Illinois on October 25, 1837. They had seven children: Elizabeth (Bettie), John Todd, Virginia, Frank, Robert, Hannah and Edwards. Bettie married Christopher C. Brown, a lawyer. After John T. Stuart’s death on November 28, 1885, Brown continued the law firm, eventually bringing his son, Stuart, into the practice.

John Todd and Mary Virginia's son, John Todd Stuart, married Emily Webster Huntington. Their daughter, Mary Virginia Stuart married George Ketchum Hall and their children included George Stuart, Henry Huntington, and Archibald Stuart.

The Stuart-Hay Families Papers at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library contain correspondence between several members of the Stuart family. This finding aid for this collection may be found at: http://alplm-cdi.com/chroniclingillinois/items/show/616.

Photographs in this collection include individual portraits of several members of the Stuart and Hall families including Mary Virginia Stuart Hall, George Hall, Henry Huntington, Elizabeth "Bettie" Brown, Christopher C.

The Stuart-Hay Families Papers at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library contain correspondence between several members of the Stuart family.

and deserving officer. He has served in his

present position (grade) over two years,

and in one capacity or another, has

been in the Army nearly four years. I

an examination before a medical

be made as desired.

Dear Sir

When I last wrote you, I spoke of the intention of my wife to bring two Illinois Soldiers from Bedloe's Island to our House until they had entirely recovered. I regret to say, than on making the necessary application to Dr Slone the Medical Director, he peremptorily refused, but only on the ground that he was positively prohibited under the regulations of the War Department from doing so.

One of them, a sergeant of the McClellan Dragoons is badly wounded through the foot, and it will be months before he is fit for service again even with the most skilful and carefuly nursing. It seems hard, that under the circumstances, he cannot be permitted to return home until he is fit for service.

Yours Truly

Geo M. Davis

The services I have performed in that capacity have in no instance interfered with my duties as Chief Clerk, making up at night the time devoted to that business. This morning I have been informally notified by Mr Thomas, Army Auditor, that I "must quit one or the other at once." I do not recognize his right to forbid either, and to forestall any misrepresentation I have to say that if you desire me to cease acting as Agent, your wish is but to be made known and I shall cheerfully comply.

I weighed the matter in all its bearings before I undertook it, and then only with the advice and consent of Govr Wood, and he will readily attest that my duties as Chief Clerk have been faithfully and promptly discharged suffering no detriment on that or other accounts.

Very Respectfully

His Excellency

Richd Yates

Governor

Hond Sir.

Acting as Agent for the collection of warrants for parties living at a distance I commenced with your approval.

Your Obt Servant

Geo. V. Rutherford

Hon. Richd Yates

Gov of Illinois.

Dear Sir:

I have attended to the business part of your letter of the eighteenth, recd yesterday, and enclose the vouchers with letter of transmittal herewith.

On the principle that the continuous falling of small drops wear away a rock, I am thumping away with my small mallet of influence and driving in a wedge here and there, where I know they will tell in your behalf.

I do sincerely hope that your success does in no degree depend upon the elevation of J.K. Dubois to the Gubernatorial chain. He is no friend of yours, whatever he may pretend to be. You can sail without him I am sure. But, if the “Wires” are so arranged, that to pull against him, will unfavorably affect you, I may, though I can see no virtue in him, relax my grief enough to let him work out his own salvation with fear and trembling, if he is not entirely God-forsaken! My dislike for him is not personal, he has always treated me as well as

[illegible] nature and habits would permit, but it is, because I believe him void of principle. If he could be unfriendly to Gov. Wood, for whom he made such loud professions of friendship, he is capable of betraying you or any one else to enhance his own sinister purposes or for his own personal aggrandizement.

Would like you to post me a little with regard to your relations to him in the coming contest.

Of course you will be, beyond peradventure, the candidate for the Senate. I have never thought of anything else. You can have no successful opposition. Trumbull is ausgespielt; who else then, but the man who has done so much for the glory of Illinois, and, withal, made the Colonel that made the greatest General now living! Shall be our U.S. Senator!

Pardon me for speaking so freely of yourself, but tis a Rutherford's claimed prerogative to “speak out in meeting” when ever the spirit moveth without barring the presence of any [illegible].

I'll tell you more particularly what I have been, and am still doing, when you come. Little though it may be, its all my might.

The redoutable Schermerhorn is here fixing up the State accounts, with some success I guess, I am doing all I can to help him.

Gov. Wood was to have arrived here this week, but he has not yet appeared.

With best respects,

I am Governor,

Very respectfully Your friend & obt. Servant
