My dear friend
I have one special favor to ask of you - I am informed that a secret purpose or plan is on foot, to have me and Cunningham, removed as [illegible] and collector, of this dist - not for any cause or complaint but to get our place - and that Bromwell is the instrument to carry it out
I do not know whether this is correct or not, it is a report and may be so
I hope you will make enquiry into this report and let me know the truth, as I would not secretly be "ousted" for any consideration that could be made. Don't fail, to report your enquiry so that I may know how to govern myself [illegible]
Your friend, G W Rives

I this day received a letter from Henry, saying that he had just seen the Call for "100 days. Men & o and expressed a desire, that he Should be regarded as desiring the Command of one of his Regts- if it was not Contrary to the programme of officering said Regts- Not that he was dissatisfied with his present position, or his Regt, or officers, that he expressed such a wish, but in consequences of the 79. being so reduced in numbers, he feared a Consolidation, That he had had applied through you to the

he fears that some plan may be devised to bring about a Consolidation & by that means, he will be thrown out of the Service which he does not wish_

He thinks that at the end of the 100, days Service, an opportunity will be offered the Regts. to go in for a longer term. This is his reasoning_ & object for asking such a Command. He does not wish to leave the Service by Consolidation or any other way, till this war is over.
I now have given you his reasons as he presented to me, you see his object_ If you can grant the request, or think it best, to do so, let it be done, if it is safest & best for him to remain in his present "(posislo?)" let it be so_ I admit I do not Know what is best.

I leave it with you Knowing you will do

Dear Sir: Enclosed I send you the "waiver" of Lt. Magnen. It is all right. Lt. Bouser has done the [Sauce?], which I forwd you some weeks since.

I Recd yours of the 4. Inst all/perfectly satisfactry. The friends of Mr. Sheets were only chagrined at the appt of West - over him, because West, is well Known in this town as a full groan Copperhead & in Sympathy, with the raiders - & Jo. Peters Know it.

I do hope something will turn up that Mr. S can be taken care of. He is one of those young me that has a large & popular acquaintance

in the County & influential friends he holds two or three offices in the City, & County. Elected to all them without opposition. You will see that he is rather a Coming Man, he takes his defeats like a Man. Does not fault or blame you. he fully appreciated Your Purplexing Situation. The Only objection & Manner, I have heard from him or his friends was the appt of West as they Know him personally & Know him to be a Copperhead.

Peters, is blamed by them for this act - or appt. You are all right with Sheets but, woe, unto Jo. Peters - if they ever get a lick at him Politically.

By the way, when I see you, I will tell you what this said Peters Said about U. S. Senator, in the Presence & hearing of one of our leading men from this County while attending the last Danville Civ. Court, this spring. over

We are all getting along fine on the State tickets. You can rely upon our Rept. Spink he is for you against all others.

Dear Sir, today an election was held in Capt Groves Co. and my friend Sumner was beaten. And Mr. Moon was elected. I had no desire to interfere in the matter further than to see justice done. If true, as the petition showed a majority were in favor of Sumner, I thought he ought to have it. But it seems, if it was true that the company at a formal election changed their minds. I do not wish it to be understood that I desire the appointment of Sumner against the voice of a majority of the Company.

Some of our Battalion have been in service since the latter part of Sept. and we are expecting to be ordered into the field. Many of the men are married and poor, and their wives and children need their wages. And they particularly desire to send the money home before they go. Our pay Rolls are in the hands of Maj. Wilcox at Springfield. I do not think we have 50$ in the Battalion. If you would see Major Wilcox and send him over to pay us, you would really be a good Samaritan. If Maj. W. has the money, and is merely consulting his own convenience by delay I fear he will hear the cry of some women and children

To his Excellency, R. Yates

If Maj. W. has the money, and is merely consulting his own convenience by delay I fear he will hear the cry of some women and children

at the great day. In as much as he does not feed and clothe them, he does not the master.

Yours truly

Col Wilcox to answer

Send this to Col. Wilcox (Please return Col J.M.)

Col Wilcox - If in your power to pay off this Regiment I sincerely hope you will do so. Our friend Stipp is a good natured fellow & means no harm in what he has said. Do pay if you can as there must be suffering in the families of many of them.
