I am here leaving for Rockford and write you in haste Expecting to go to Washington in a few days on [illegible] for another - I desire a letter from you to President Lincoln in my behalf - You know and so does Mr Lincoln my many years of unselfish labor in Illinois for the Establishment of just principles for which my friends in Winnebago County & other parts of the State think me worthy of recognition by the Administration. Most of my co laborers have said good [things?]. I have had nothing though highly recommended by many leading men. Owing to the sickness of my Daughter I was not able to see the president in person as you advised me to do. I hope to do this now and with a good strong general commendation as I do not now what places are open at home and abroad

Dear Sir

Will you allow me, in behalf of our Illinois boys in hospitals at this place to enquire, as to the probability of their removal, shortly, to some point, in their own State nearer their homes. An agent, who represents that he has heretofore been acting in the interest of our boys, but who is now gathering up & transfering the Ohio & Iowa soldiers & sending them and to their respective states, has waked up in our men, such a desire to get to their own state that no thing would do them but I must write you. I wish very much it could be done.

Our poor boys have suffered every thing but death while on the lower Mississippi. Many, very many have died since they got here, a month since to day, & many more will die, unless something can be done to [send?] them home, or towards home. I have made my official to Grant to allowed them all to be furloughed for 31 days. no response. Can any thing be done. I will cheerfully

act as agent, without fee or reward if duly authorized. If in the midst of your numerous engagements you can find time to drop me a line on this subject you will confer a special [favor?] on our poor suffering boys, who already feel that they owe much to you & your noble efforts in their behalf

I have the honor to be

I do wish you could go down with us I shall go if possible will leave here friday night I want you to send me letter to the Authorities at Cairo to insure my getting down the river. the Doctors say I must not remain down the river.

I am satisfied there will be formidable organized resistance to the draft in many parts of this State. I am further satisfied that whether there is a draft or not there is a settled purpose of revolution in the State. Large bodies of men meet in arms in various parts of the State, in some cases four or five hundred armed men and applaud speakers who advise them to arm + resist. The oppressions

of the Government. Companies and battalions drill by day and night, threatening opposition to the Government. An attack may be expected at any time. Murders and assassinations continually occur. Our state is defenseless. You do not reply to my appeals for troops and arms. You have not answered my letter of Aug 5th. I will again appeal to you either to send arms for the Militia Companies now being organized, or to send an independent force of five or six Regiments to Gen Ammen here - or what would perhaps be the best course send seven or eight of our old Regiments to the State to recruit. I beseech you to consider this carefully and to act immediately.

Sec of War

Gov. Yates:

I am home for a few days on Order. I desire to report to your Excellency that the condition of the 81st Illinois Regiment is healthy in all respects. The men are highly pleased with their officers. True, we have been through bloody carnage; yet our reputation remains untarnished by a single dishonorable action. I have endeavored in all my intercourse with the men to instill into their minds a high sense of honor. True, I have held the office

of Chaplain only, but that I regard as a noble & exalted position for a man to occupy. Chaplains will find work enough to perform when they will do their whole duty. Our loved Illinois Shines the brightest in the galaxy of States. This we soldiers all consider is mainly due to your writings & labors in the glorious cause of the Union. Your name will be Renowned & honored as foremost among the first in this mighty Struggle for the life of the nation.

The Illinois Soldiers are proud of our noble & patriotic Governor as well as of our Generals Grant, Logan & other heroes. You, Sir, must feel a proud Satisfaction of being respected & admired as "the Soldiers friend." While we as true & faithful Soldiers honor & obey our leaders in the field, we do not forget our friends at home. Permit me to Say that your Excellency need never wish to have any prouder or nobler epitaph inscribed on your monument than this of the "Soldiers' friend." And the Soldiers will most assuredly remember their friend

when they return from the War, those that are permitted to come back to Illinois. Your writings as well as your deeds have shed imperishable tastes upon our beloved State. Not alone in the field have great achievements been made but also at home, immortal fame has been gained by - the loyal, the wise & the good. No name, in my opinion, will be transmitted to (illegible) ages with more honor & glory than that of our Illinois Executive. This I say too, speaking in behalf of the Soldiers of Illinois.

Gov.

Yours truly - W.S. Post

Sir. Yours Containing Notice that Mr. Wm. G. Greene Would pay $200.00 being part of Interest Due from you to B.F. Beekman is received and am Induced to answer the same for two reasons, First, admit the Interest to have been $200.00 on the 1st of July / 63 it certainly would seem to me to be more than that on the 3rd Day of August of / 63 and you Do not do business that way yourself neither would you allow others to Do it for you. (Secondly) You seem to think in the close of your-note that I am Disposed to Impose upon you if I had the powers - I am Very Sorry that you should thus conclude for I know it is not my will or inclination. But sir - I hold it good that men should always Do right and we ask for nothing but our own. and Mr. Green received the same notice

Now sir, Green and Beekman originally agreed to pay the 12% you signed the notes for- the reason that your name is thereunto appended Beekman still agrees to pay it. Green seeks to evade it and no Doubt has thus reported to you. Now you can all get clear of Paying it By Law I know neither Do we intend to try to enforce the collection of the 2% By Law but we Do think we are entitled to it by the contract and will receive it as a great favor if you with the balance will come out and either refuse to pay it or walk up to the point and meet us fairly and further-

more if We Do not get the 2% Extra we certainly shall enforce the collection of the Notes with the Legal rate of Interest as soon as We shall Deem it proper I regret that Mr. Green should take the course towards me that he Does in misrepresenting my acts when some of them towards you have been under his knowledge and Instructions but I have Lived long enough to know that we frequently Soon (learn?) are (illegible) unconscious of it at the time And you to may yet Live to Learn that such is the case. Act as Duty may Dictate to you relative to answering this Note But I would take it as a favor would you Do so. I shall try to meet the parties at 11 may. Beekmans on the 18th to finally settle this 2% one way or the other when I Would Like to have your Decision to. You can Inform them and they can act for you Mr. Green has not yet paid the money nor give any notice to me

Our League is over 100 Strong all true men but have no arms. In the county we number at Least 400 and as many more who are right on the union question. We have take an [illegible] [illegible] of small arms at Vicksburg & else where lately & I should think arrangements might be made with the federal authorities to have arms distributed among loyal men in the north & Especially in [Egypt?]

I would Suggest that a few hundred you [illegible] be sent to Mr. T. J. Shannon or J T [Japress?] at Mt Carmel for distribution in some form I think that itself would be sufficient to deter them from any overt acts.

I hope His Excellency Gov. Yates will adopt some prompt measures to arrest this growing evil. If these Companys are allowed to go ahead unmolested others will organized in a short time. Indeed I have already heard that an other Company is to be organized in our County in [illegible] [illegible] immediately there is not a loyal man amongst them such men with arms in their hands are certainly dangerous in times like these especially when they are so badly disaffected towards the State and federal authorities.

I write to you on this subject as you are better acquainted with the locality as well as the [Benpas?] material & can give the Governor a correct understanding of both.

Dear Sir

Since the Raid on [Olny?] on the night of the of the 21 [illegible] the Southern Sympathisers Seem bent on mischief, they are organizing into Military Companies and meeting for drill every week openly and above board - a company meets every Saturday on Suckers Prairie Lawrence County, they may understand they intend to resist the draft unless some Copperhead Judge pronounce it Constitutional

No Judge it does appear to me our State Executive should take some steps to [break?] up this den of traitors. If nothing else why not distribute some arms amongst the Union men.

Yours for Union & Freedom
