Petersburg Ill Apr 12th 1863 Mr. Gov - Yates I now take the present time to write to you a few lines to let you know my troubles that has been brought on me in my old days which has been brought on by this war I am a poor widow woman my husband has been dead about 19 years leaving me with a house full of children to raise and nothing to raise them on and at first did not know what to do but went to work taking in washing or any thing that I could get to do and I managed to make a living for <hr /> them and I am now old and not able to work and I have only one boy left that is able to do any thing for me and last summer they were getting up companies of soldiers here and they got after him to join and they that were making up the companies got him up town and they treated him pursuaded and hired him and got him to drinking and kept him drunk untill they took him away and promised him his monthly wages and bounty money extra and the morning they started I went to the captain and told him that my boy was drunk and did not what he was doing and for him to let him stay untill he got sober and then if he wanted to go I would not say <hr /> a word against it and he went off and gathered them all up and started with them and my boy was so drunk that he could not set up in the wagon but they laid him in and he lay there not knowing where they were taking him or what they would do with him I heard they said that they had taken him away drunk and they meant to keep him drunk untill he was mustered into services so he would be safe and he staid with them about five months and they Lieutenant wrote back that he was as good a soldier as they had and all the time he was gone he did not draw any bounty money and only one months wages he kept with them to perryvill ky him and <hr /> some other boys stopped at a house one moring and while they were there some of Morgans men come along and took them and kept two or three drays and paroleed them and sent them home and now they say they can make them go back and some tells me there is no law to bind a man that is taken away drunk and dont know what he is doing and I want to know if you cant do some thing for me in some way to get him clear and if you can and will I will pay you for all your troubles I want you to think how you would feell if you were in my place if it was in my power to help you I would be ready and willing to do it and I want you to do all you can for me and write immediately what you can do and what you will do I would have come to see you but was not able to come Yours Lucy Hinesley <hr /> P.S. They seem to be determine at all hazard to resist the conscription act of Congress. when even it is attemped to inforce it. And for this purposs, they have held a meeting and formed themselves into a company, and elected officers. I cannot say who there officers is. but I know about all that signed the role. In this township (Cooperstown town-ship) they number about 80 or 90 old and young. all voters. and all proofessedly Democrats. but in reality sympathisers with the rebels. This all I kneed to say, as <hr /> you are aware of there movements. But I must say that the lawal men of these parts are in no condition to contend with all these traiters. But few has any arms to defend themselves with. as for myself I have never owned as much as a pistle in my life. In one word we aught to destroy slavery for them utterly and forever, and then just as fast as we conquer a state, call a state convention, allowing only true Union Men to vote, (if they are only ten or 20 in a county,) disfranchise all Rebels and Emancipate all Slaves. We have K. G. C.'s who meet at dead hours of the night and concoct their hellish schemes, and perform their infernal acts. Least night, my nearest neighbor, "James Bruff," an old man, and unconditional Union man, who has fought for his country, (in 1815 & 14.) suffered the loss of his orchard which he had been twenty five years in growing <hr /> His hart is almost Crushed at this blow of fiendish brutality. Abner Cox, another union man, one who will not truck with the "Secesh" also, has not only had his orchard feeled, but he has been threatened, having found a letter in his own yard containing a notice to leave on pain of death. - Babcock has lost his fruit his trees having been feeled and his strawberry fields were littered & burried. Rev Wm Wisener, a methodist minister, living on a rented farm, (belonging to a secessionist) suffered the loss of his horses, by poison. On Thursday night last, (12th inst.) there was a meeting in our district school-house, to elect officers and organize, to resist the arrest of the men who have deserted from our Ill Regiments, now at home. And Jame Newton, son is making cartridges and (suppliing) furnishing those who are willing to resist. several persons have <hr /> seen them. Now my Dear Sir. we have a disposition to stand by our country forever, and we need assistance & that speedily, our property is insecure our very lives are unsafe, but we would feel safe if a few of the most prominent & impudent of the K. G. A Committee of five consisting of McKenzie Turner, Euston Whitton, John Crabtree, Spartan Grisham and E. A. Austin, were appointed to draft resolutions expressive of the sense of the meeting. When the Committee retired, one universal shout for Vandeveer went up. Hon. H. M. Vandeveer took the stand and for two hours and a half addressed the audience. His remarks were frequently interrupted by loud and continued cheering. When he was through, Hon. Gus. Walker, of Carlinville, was called out and for an hour more entertained the attentive audience. Resolved That in the opinion of the meeting no war should be waged or prosecuted by any administration under this Government, unless the objects of war have such merits as meets the approval of the Administration at Washington to compel the people of other States, whether the objects of the war meet their approval or condemnation.
