He has sent two sons to the war, and recruited more than two hundred men without compensation of any kind, and his plea in behalf of his son is justly entitled to your humane consideration.

Sir,

I take the liberty of enclosing, for your information, Copies of Circulars concerning the Great Fair in aid of the U.S. Sanitary Commission to be opened in Brooklyn 22nd February next.

By the Circular of the Committee on Produce, it will be seen that an important feature in the undertaking is to exhibit Some production from Every one of the Thirty four States in the Union. The Treasury department aids us to accomplish this, so far as the Southern States are concerned, and we naturally look to the civil authorities to assist us in the other States.

May I therefore beg your cooperation in this good work? If you could at same time induce Express or Transportation Companies to carry your State's donations hither, free, it would be a further benefit to the cause. The goods should, if possible, be representative of the industry of the State, and may be sent to my address. Permit me to add that celerity in dispatching them will be of great Service to us.

I am

Yours respectfully.

Arch Baxter

Chairman of Committee on Produce B&LJ Fair.

Brooklyn and Long Island Fair,

in aid of the

U. S. Sanitary Commission.

Dear Sir: -

In the terrible conflict now being waged for the preservation of our Government and Nationality, everything belong to our personal, social, and political welfare is at stake, and the brave and gallant men in arms are perilling their lives, and giving up the comfort and joy of their homes, in our stead. They fight these hard battles for us. They endure these severe exposures for us. They are wasting away in the filth and starvation of Rebel prisons for us. And, when stricken down by the diseases of the camp, or wounded and maimed in the field, they have a right, sanctioned by every patriotic and humane consideration, to expect the Nation to come to their succor. The U. S. Sanitary Commission, by its most disinterested and gratuitous labors, has proved itself the wise, prompt, faithful, reliable, and sufficient agent of the Nation in this regard; and, therefore, by a Fair, to be opened on the birth-day of the Father of his Country, the 22d of February next, at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, we purpose and confidently expect to secure from the City, and the entire Island, a contribution of at least One Hundred and Fifty Thousand Dollars to its Treasury. The inspiring examples of the Cities---Chicago, Boston, Cincinnati---should excite among us an honorable emulation. Let it be seen that in this great national crisis, we are at least as generous, self-sacrificing, and resolved, as the foremost of them. This enterprise has been undertaken at the instance of the Woman's Relief Association, and the War Fund Committee of this City. As an earnest of the spirit which has prompted it and will carry it through, we point to the fact, that at a meeting of the General Committee, on the 19th ulto., Twenty-five Thousand Five Hundred Dollars, were subscribed on the spot; an amount already increased to Forty Thousand Dollars. As a further pledge that the enterprise shall not fail, we subjoin the names of those of either sex who have consented to share its Management; with those of the various sub-Committees, who are responsible for the complete working of the several departments of the Fair. We appeal to our fellow-citizens and noble women here, and through the Island, and to those elsewhere who may fairly be expected to sympathise with us in our undertaking, to lend their aid by personal efforts, and the largest contributions of Material and Money, of Agricultural Produce, of the fruits of Manufacturing and Mechanical skill, of Works of Art; of anything and everything from their industry, ingenuity, or abundance, which may swell the grand result for which we look.

Further particulars in relation to the arrangements for the Fair will be made known as early as possible, by Circulars from the several Special Committees, and by the other documents from the Executive Committee; and a complete History of the Fair, with the Contributions and Names of the Donors, will be published. A handsome Steel-Engraved Certificate of Membership will be also given to every active contributor.

Meanwhile, any desired information in regard to the Fair may be had of the Corresponding Secretary, either by personal application, at the Rooms of the War Fund Committee, 16 Court Street, daily, Sundays excepted, between the hours of 9 and 12, 2 and 5; or, by mail to his address; or, for Ladies, at the Depot of the Women's Relief Association, 30 Court Street.

Brooklyn and Long Island Fair,

in aid of the

U. S. Sanitary Commission.

Dear Sir:---

We, the undersigned, having been designated a "Committee on Produce" in connection with the above Fair, beg leave to enclose for your information the Circular of the Executive Committee setting forth the claims and objects of the undertaking.

Our principal duty under this appointment is to solicit contributions of every description of Produce, from those Citizens of Brooklyn who are engaged in the several departments of the Produce trade of New-York. We are also authorised to receive donations of money from those who may prefer to aid the undertaking in that way. But as the success of the Fairs recently held in other Cities---particularly Chicago and Cincinnati---was in no small measure owing to the profuse liberality of those who contributed "in kind," and as such a mode is more consonant with the idea of a Fair, we trust that those to whom this is addressed, will enable us to make such a representation in goods as shall compare favorably with the results in the Cities referred to.

It is moreover intended to exhibit in the Produce department, contributions from every State in the Union---Southern as well as Northern---disaffected, or partially so, as well as loyal---those from the South to be the product of Free Labor. The Secretary of the U.S. Treasury has considerately instructed the different agencies of his department in North and South Carolina, Louisiana, and the South-west, to assist us in carrying out our aim, so that on the opening of the Fair, we hope to present a picture which shall have this threefold emblematical significance:

First:---That a Bountiful Providence has lavished its gifts upon us in great variety and profusion.

Second:---That the Government has already so far succeeded in overcoming the rebellion as to make its influence felt in every State.

Third:---That the day is not far distant---as we fervently trust---when the country shall be thoroughly united as of yore---but with this difference, that its entire resources shall be developed and enjoyed without the taint of slavery.

Will you not by your contributions aid us in making this Fair a success worthy of Brooklyn, and of the ladies under whose benevolent impulses it has been undertaken? We forbear to add a word to the forcible appeal of the Executive Committee on the duty of succouring the sick and wounded, as the whole community seems fully aroused to the imperative obligations resting on it in this regard; but in discharge of our duty we shall endeavor to give each member of the Produce trade an opportunity to contribute his quota to the grand result.

                    <text>
Feby 4, 1864. I recommend discharge of this man. Richd Yates Gov. of Ills

Cincinnati Ohio Jan 27th/64

Hon. Govenor Yates Gov. of Ill.

Dear Sir I would respectfully Submit a few questions to your Honor also ask of you a favor. hopeing that they may be respectively considered by you. first, I am one of a Family of Reffugees from Mos. being driven from our homes thrown out upon the mercies of a cold world pennyless. Since this unholy rebelion broke out bringing us down from a position whare we did not know what want for anything ment to our present position. Since then and about one year ago my own poor mother ("Died") which has been the means of breaking up all that we could call home. Scatering the family to the four winds of Heaven. again I myself have not been well enough for one year & 4 months to do a days work. yet have managed to live sometime amongst friends at another time in County poorhouses. hence being driven to the course I have taken imagining that this war would close in less than a year and these large bounties offered by the government also the countys offering another inducement by way of bounty to fill up their quotas of men,

these inducements was to strong for me in my straightened circumstances to resist, thinking that I perhaps would not have to serve more than a year I then would be able to help myself. I on the 15th of December did enlist in the 21st Ind Battery as Saddler went before the medical examiner for examination and by my missrepresenting my own health passed the examination after doing so on going home Dr. Hendricks who was appointed to distribute the one hundred Dollars to each man refused to give me mine on the ground that i would not pass on going to Indianapolis hence refuseed to give it to me the Lieutenant acertained how it was with me and I went to him an refused to go unless I got the Bounty. here in order to give you an Idea of my health I will tell you whats the matter on the 28th of last November one year ago I was taken with what Physicians called a Paryletic stroke congestion of the Brain an Epleptic fitt with what many others have vanerial Diseases all forming a combination the latter being the seat of trouble with the cause that produced the Effect to frequent coition or conexion with women these fitts one never has but three two of which I have had the last one on the morning of the 5th of January

while at breakfast of the same morning that the Lieutenant gave to me my Enlistment papers this case is like this after they refused to give to me the county Bounty the Lieutenant took the papers and wrote upon them thus. I surrendered these papers to Peter Oliver Coho Dec 30th he being unfit for the position assighned to him this I supposed cleared me entirely yet I did not like to give it up. went to Chicago and there Enlisted again in the Rail Road Regiment which was to be mounted infantry I enlisted there as a Saddler. there they arrested me as a deserter have had me since the 6th under arrest in Jails and guard houses at Chicago here and around on takeing me to Louisvill I determined that I had been in custody long enough. I did not feel as though I was a deserter while under arrest---now I suppose I would be considered as such (one fact more of my Disease Dr. N. S. Davis, of Chicago called it Epeleptic Paroxysms. & Paralysis. the Exposure to which I have been compelled to undergo convinced me I was not able to go through as I had thought I could hence my reason for leaving them as I considered that I had endured cold & Greybacks & hunger long enough

hence the favor I would ask of you which is this my father and his friends are above reproach Father being a minister of the M. E. Church and I wanting in fact needing to throw myself upon these charities not being able to take hold of hard work as once I could I therefore Pray you to grant and give me a discharge So that I may go back there for the truth of this statement I would refer you to parties in South Bend

Dr. Hendricks. Rev. Asa Coho Mr. Farnsworth Post Master and they can give you as many as you want. Sir be kind enough to make out an honorable discharge and forward it to South Bend Indiana in care of Rev Asa Coho my father Although not even he shall know anything of my whereabouts for sometime for if I can I am of for Canada no more hopeing you will act imediately I Subscribe myself

Your Most Obedient Servant

                <text>

New York, January 28, 1864.

The day is not far distant when you will be called upon to elect an occupant for the Presidential Chair. This is a most important and momentous question, well worthy of your careful consideration.

From the 12th of April, 1861, our march onward has been steady and grand. The heart of the people has been true to the great principles of liberty, which are to be maintained to the END.

In ABRAHAM LINCOLN the loyal people have found a true leader, and an able defender of the great ideas upon which our Government was founded. He has been tried and not found wanting. No man in modern times ever came into office under such trying circumstances--none ever worked more diligently to bring discordant elements together and make them move in harmony.

From the chaos of human passions, dishonest interests, political intrigues, and subtle treason pervading every department of Government, order has been created, and although in the midst of a war of almost unparalleled magnitude, we move on as in times of the most sublime peace.

It is therefore proposed that on the 22d of February, 1864, all citizens of the United States, without regard to party, who are in favor of the re-election of ABRAHAM LINCOLN, shall meet at appropriate places, within their towns, counties, or states, for the purpose of giving public expression of their sentiments upon this most important question.

Esteemed Sir

There is a case of very much importance pending in the circuit court of this county which will come on for trial on the 3rd Monday of March next. I refer to the case of The People &c vs Michael Smith &al for the murder of Chester Carpenter. Two of the most important witnesses for the prosecution are now in the army towit Cap James H. Wright of Co E 87th Ills Mounted Infantry and Lieutenant Campbell of the 60th Ills Vols. Every possible effort has heretofore been made to procure the attendance of these two witnesses but without success. The cause was continued at the last turn of court but with the understanding that an other continuance could not

be had, so that if the prosecution fail to have the witnesses in attendance at the next turn of court, these two murders will be turned out on the community without a trial

Mr C. C. Carpenter (brother of deceased) visits Springfield for the purpose of trying to obtain your influence with the military officers commanding the two officers above named in procureing for them leaves of absence so that they may attend our court as witnesses in this important case I would be pleased if you could aid Mr Carpenter in this matter, he feels a great deal of interest in the case and in fact the whole community are feeling the importance of having those men properly prosecuted

Yours Truly

To his Excellency

Gov. Yates.

A letter has been received from Camp Yates, from a number of the Mercantile Battery (new recruits) complaining of bad treatment while at the camp bearing your name at Springfield. Some of the men live in this place---one in particular is well used to all the hard fare of campaigning, and they call the treatment 'execrable' I do not write you thinking you at fault, but as the soldier considers you his special friend and protector, they express a desire that you may know how they are treated by persons whose duty it is, to look after and care for them and see that the soldier has rations, and everything other thing which he is entitled to. One letter lying now before me says--- 'I have just taken supper, dry bread, no meat and coffee.'

This is perhaps one of a thousand instances where the men suffer, while the officer is to be blamed. Through the friends of these soldiers I am asked to call your attention to this

this matter, thinking that if these particular men do not get the full benefit of your presence in camp by stirring up these officers, some others who are as deserving of good treatment will. The writer of this particular letter desired Jno. B. Preston Esqr. of this place (Canal Supt.) to write your Excellency, but Mr. Preston being sick, the friends called upon me.

I am satisfied that a man who has graduated in the U. S. Navy would not complain unless he had ample cause.

For the sake of the men who propose to go and fight our battles and whip our enemies into obedience to the law I beg you will see to this matter. the soldier has got the idea into his head that Gov. Yates is his friend. I believe so too or I would not trouble with this note.

For the good treatment of the soldier, if it be a necessity to hang or dismiss the guilty officer, why, then do so at once, and the soldier is the better man for it.

I am Your Obt Servt

Lockport, Jan. 29th 1864.

A. J. Mathewson.
