The Federal Writers' Project provided employment opportunities for historians, teachers, writers, librarians, and other white-collar workers. Initially the project produced guidebooks entitled American Guide on several regions of the country with an emphasis on the the country's scenic, historical, cultural, and economic resources. The Illinois Writers' Project, the state office for the Federal Writers' Project, produced state-wide guidebooks as well as regional publications which included work by Richard Wright, Saul Bellow, Margaret Walker, and Louis "Studs" Terkel.

The photographs contained in this collection include images of farm life in southern Illinois, Chicago architecture, Greek-American life in Chicago's Greektown, and historic buildings and architecture throughout the state.

I believe I can better serve the Country by raising a new Regt during that time & would like to have Messrs

I therefore respectfully request the appointment. But however it may be with myself, I urge upon your kind consideration their claims for the positions they seek. I feel sure they would reflect honor upon the State & Country.

Attorney at Law
Tuscola, Ills

Tuscola, Ills July 1st 1863

To his Excellency,
Gov. Yates of Ills

Gov. in view of the fact that the late Democratic Legislature refused to make any appropriations for relief of our sick and wounded soldiers now in the field, it is reasonable to presume that you are unable to extend to those brave sufferers that liberal hand which which your benevolent and patriotic heart would desire, and the cause of humanity, and the honor of your noble State demand. Therefore, to enable you, so far as I may be able, to meet the emergency of the case, independently of the legislative appropriations, I propose giving you a deed of trust on my property in this village to secure the payment of $300.00 payable in Four years from date with with seven percent and take the risk of the state redeeming it. I have a policy of insurance on it for $1000.00 which runs to the 20th day of June 1868. I owe $600.00 on it payable in ! & 2 years. I have paid on $600 in cash. It is now worth (as I verily believe) $1500.00 in Money. This is an honest statement of the value and condition of the property on which I offer the security. If you can use securities of this kind to aid you in this great work, please let me know at an early day, and I try and get others of the same kind for the same purpose.

With sentiments of devotion to the cause of our bleeding country, I am your obedient Servant

Greenberry Wright

P.S. As you will see from the card & heading of this letter- I have moved from Mason to this place.

If securities of this kind

In view of the Legislature failing to match the [profuse?] appropriations- and to enable the Governor to meet the emergency of the case he proposes to give the Governor a deed of trust on his property to secure the payment of two hundred & fifty Dollars and take the risk of the State redeeming. If securities of this kind
can be used please let him know.

On the 25 inst a No of our Citizens in Marion met by agreement a No of others at Wardsvill about 9 miles south of town & formed a secetion company of 85 men, elected their officers & wer then addressed by James Pulley our Rept, John A Clemeson, our states Atorney, Robert Hunley & John Cunningham & I am
informed that they all made as strong secetion speaches as they were caipable of making & that they aided & assisted the 85 rebells & that some of them went with them to the Ohio river & saw them safely land in
Paduch Ky on their way to Memphis Tenn to fite under Pillow & against our Country.

G. Garland

I was in Marion on Yesterday the 28 inst & was informed that thes same pretious rascals were trying to form an otherer company with fair prospects of success, for Jeff Davis. & I was urged & pressed on all sides & by all parties to write to you & get you to thoroughly investigate the whole business & bring all of their leaders to justice for if you do not attend to this business & effectually put down treason here God only knows what will become of us down here in Southern Ill. The Union cause is now gainning ground here every day & we have almost a majority in this Co, but the Devils in human form do but little else but drink whiskey & hatch treason & if they were well treated according to their Crimes & be put where all traitors ought to be we would not only [have tried?] in Marion but would soon have a large majority of Union men in this Co. Do not understand me to say that I was an eye witness to the above statements but I can find men who were & I believe the evidence is abondant against them & can be procured when needed. I did
here our States Atorney say that the last treason acts that our legislature passed could or would

I cannot mail this letter at Atilla my post office address for if I did it would pass through Marion & the post office there is in the hands of the traitors, Patrick Lang ought to be made P.M. at Marion immediately, he is not only a good Republican & union man but is responcible, honest &

Founded by Captain Benjamin Godfrey to provide education for women, the school offered two years of classes for attendees based on the idea that “if you educate a man you educate an individual; educate a woman and you educate a whole family.”

Godfrey selected Reverend Theron Baldwin to serve as the first head of the Monticello Female Seminary. In 1867 Harriet Haskell became principal, a position she held until her death in 1907.

On November 4, 1888, a fire broke out in the building and consumed the entire structure. Ms. Haskell and the school's Board of Trustees successfully fundraised for a new building and rebuilt the school in two years.

The school's leadership made the decision to close the school in 1970 with the final class graduating in 1971. Lewis and Clark Community College completed the purchase of the Monticello College campus in 1972.

The finding aid for the Monticello College (Godfrey, IL) Records at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library may be found at https://illinois.as.atlas-sys.com/repositories/2/resources/545.

The finding aid for the photographic Monticello College Collection at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum may be found at https://illinois.as.atlas-sys.com/repositories/3/resources/4702.

</text>
