Founded by Captain Benjamin Godfrey to provide education for women, the school offered two years of classes for attendees based on the idea that “if you educate a man you educate an individual; educate a woman and you educate a whole family.” Godfrey selected Reverend Theron Baldwin to serve as the first head of the Monticello Female Seminary. In 1867 Harriet Haskell became principal, a position she held until her death in 1907.  On November 4, 1888, a fire broke out in the building and consumed the entire structure. Ms. Haskell and the school's Board of Trustees successfully fundraised for a new building and rebuilt the school in two years. The school's leadership made the decision to close the school in 1970 with the final class graduating in 1971. Lewis and Clark Community College completed the purchase of the Monticello College campus in 1972. Typographical Union No. 177. During the 1970s the Jacksonville, Decatur, Danville, Quincy, Taylorville and Hannibal, Missouri, locals joined Number 177 and in 1975 the name changed to the Central Illinois Typographical Union. The union was part of the International Typographical Union which formed in 1867 to advance the interests of the printers and to promote harmony among them. The first issues the unions dealt with were pay, working hours and conditions. After the unions became more established they worked for more long term concerns such as old age pensions, mortuary benefits and paid sick time. The unions also worked to start an apprentice program. In 1915 the Springfield local voted to make the term of apprenticeship five years, with pay of $5.00 per week the first year. Apprentices had to qualify by having their grammar, spelling and other academic skills tested, to assure that their work on the linotype or teletype setters would produce accurate results. The Woman’s Auxiliary of the ITU was formed in 1902 to raise awareness of union products, the union label, and to raise funds for the Printer’s Retirement Home or to help families of members during hard times. Jacksonville’s union joined No. 177 in 1897. It was not until 1971 that Taylorville joined. Then Decatur merged with the Springfield union in 1975, Quincy in 1976 and Danville in 1978. The union's name changed to Central Illinois Typographical Union in 1975. In the 1980’s computers became prevalent and allowed for the writer and editor of a story to also act as printer. This caused union membership to drop drastically. Cannon was born in Guilford, North Carolina, the son of Dr. Horace Cannon and Gulielma Hollingsworth Cannon.  After the death of his father in 1851, Joseph went to work in a pottery in Annapolis, Indiana. While working as a clerk in a store he met John F. Usher, a lawyer, who agreed to let Cannon read the law under him and work as a clerk in his office.  Cannon attended law school at the University of Cincinnati, earning his diploma in six months. After attempting to set up practice in Shelbyville, Illinois with little luck, he moved to Tuscola where he worked the circuit. Cannon was elected state’s attorney in 1861, holding the position until 1868. In 1862 he married Mary Reed, from Ohio, who had come to Illinois to live with her brother and teach school. The Cannons moved to Danville, Illinois, in 1876.   Cannon sucessfully ran for Congress as a Republican in 1872, beginning what would become a 46 year career in the United States House of Representatives.  During his time in the House of Representatives Cannon served on the Committee on Appropriations, eventually becoming chairman, and the Committee on Rules. Cannon served as the chairman of the Committee on Rules and as Speaker concurrently, allowing him to determine committee chairmanships and members as well as what bills would reach the floor of the House. Cannon lost this power in 1910 after a Democrat-led revolt. Cannon, known as "Uncle Joe," rose in the Republican Party, becoming Speaker of the House from 1903-1910. Cannon is the second-longest serving Speaker of the House and was the first member of the House to pass 40 years of service (non-consecutive). Cannon lost two elections during his career in the House of Representatives (1890 and 1912) but he regained his seat in the following elections each time. Cannon retired from the House of Representatives in 1923 at the age of eighty-six. He and his wife had two daughters, Mabel and Helen. Mary, or Molly as Cannon called her, died in 1899.  Cannon died in 1926. National Guard Coal miners Mining industry Miners African Americans Description An account of the resource In September 1898 representatives of the United Mine Workers of America stopped a railroad car in Virden, Illinois, filled with potential African American strikebreakers. The train continued on to Springfield after the union members informed them of the strike between the members and the Chicago-Virden Coal Company. On October 12, 1898, a second train of African American strikebreakers from Birmingham, Alabama, and security guards arrived in Virden. The security guards opened fire when striking miners attempted to surround the train at the entrance to the mining facility. The train departed Virden after twenty minutes of gunfire and headed for Springfield. By the end of the conflict four security guards and seven striking miners were killed and 30 people were wounded. The mine owners accepted unionization at the mine in November 1898 and the mine remained segregated for many years after. Similar conflicts occurred in Pana on April 10, 1899, Lauder on June 6, 1899, and Carterville on September 17, 1899. Still Image A static visual representation. She attended elementary school in Mississippi (1916-1922) and high school and junior college in Chicago after her family moved to Illinois in 1923. She received her diploma from Provident Hospital School of Nursing in 1933 and degrees in Public Health Nursing from Loyola University (B.S. 1942) and in Administration and Supervision from the University of Chicago (M.S., 1954). Ms. Durham attended Tuskegee Nurse-Midwifery School in Alabama and did graduate coursework at Illinois Teachers College (1958-1965) and Roosevelt University (1965). Her forty-five year professional career included positions as staff and public health nurse, nursing school teacher/supervisor, consultant in maternal and child health and in personal and public service occupations, elementary/adult education teacher and librarian. She worked at such private and public organizations as nurse midwifery schools, Chicago Department of Health, U.S. Children’s Bureau, National League for Nursing, Illinois State Board of Vocational Education and Rehabilitation and the East Central Curriculum Management Center. Ms. Durham retired from the Illinois Office of Education in June 1978. She worked briefly on an educational research project at Eastern Illinois University, July 1978-June 1979. She was active in several community and religious organizations including: Senior Learners Program, Sangamon State University, American Nurses Association, NAACP, Springfield Urban League, Gray Panthers, Land of Lincoln Legal Assistance Foundation, and Project Area Agency on Aging. The Etter Family came to Illinois in 1826 with the arrival of Henry and Eliza Etter and their young family. Their son, Henry Etter, Jr., married Estereen Davidson and he worked on the family farm throughout his life. James Etter, the son of Henry and Estereen, was born in 1848. James worked on the family farm before moving to his own farm. He served as constable, road commissioner, township clerk and collector and assessor of the township of South Palmyra. He married Julia Richie in 1873 and had six children including Henry Ross Etter. Henry Ross Etter attended Drake College and worked as a teacher for four years. Beginning in 1903, Etter worked as an editor for the Weekly Transcript in Palmyra. Etter purchased the newspaper in 1909 and served as the publication's owner and publisher. Etter married Laura Thompson in 1905 and the couple had two children, Florence Evelyn and Lorton Dale. (Ina Belle) Description An account of the resource William H. Herdman, a blacksmith and early resident of Mount Vernon, Illinois, was the son of Robert and Jane Hanson Herdman. He married Mary A. Kirby, the daughter of Moses and Lydia Williamson Kirby. Herdman moved to Mount Vernon from Pennsylvania in 1850. In 1865 his brother, Thomas, a Methodist Episcopal minister, came from Ohio to head the Methodist Seminary at Mount Vernon which closed down during the Civil War. He remained there for four years and then acted as minister for several different churches in the area. In 1890 he was elected president of McKendree College. He remained at the college in various positions for approximately ten years. William Hamilton and Mary had eight daughters including Ada I. Herdman, Ina B. Herdman, Florence V. Herdman, Ellen A. Herdman Gowenlock, Henrietta "Etta" Herdman Doud, Octavia L. Herdman Huff, and Grace Herdman Harris. Henrietta "Etta" Herdman married Menzer Fairchild Doud of St. Louis, Missouri, a newspaper writer for various papers in Kansas and Missouri. Their daughter, Grace, was a school teacher and served as chairman of the Missouri State Association of Childhood Education in 1939. Their oldest daughter, Ada, was also a schoolteacher and taught in the Mount Vernon area for many years. Henrietta Doud's youngest daughter, Virginia, provided many of the photo identifications on the photographs. Title A name given to the resource Adolph Berger Collection Subject The topic of the resource Berger, Adolph, 1820-1912 Physicians Illinois--Lebanon German Americans Description An account of the resource Adolph Berger, a German physician who practiced medicine in Lebanon, Illinois, was born about 1820 and educated at Heidelberg, Germany. While a student, he became attracted to the 1848 revolutionary movement. Following the failure of the revolutions in Germany, a number of political refugees – “Forty-eighters” – emigrated to the United States. Frederich Hecker, one of the refugees who had been a hero of the German revolution, had settled in the Belleville, Illinois, area. His presence attracted a number of young Germans to the Belleville-Lebanon area. Berger arrived in Lebanon in 1848 and began his medical practice on June 13, 1850. He continued to practice medicine in the same locality for the next fifty-three years. Berger was active in civic affairs. He was a member of the St. Clair County Medical Society, Lebanon Chapter No. 62 of the Royal Arch Masons, Lebanon Town Board, Lebanon Board of Education, and a committee that coordinated the financing of the Mascoutah and Lebanon Railroad. Berger also supported the Lebanon public library and the local German singing societies. Like many of the 1848 German immigrants, he resisted the temperance and prohibition movement. Berger belonged to the Presbyterian Church. Vernon, 1894-1972 Description An account of the resource The Janotta Family Collection contains photographs relating to conductor/composer Alfredo Jannotta, his wife, activist and author Stella Skiff Jannotta, and their family. Several photographs belonged to their son, Navy Rear Admiral A. Vernon Jannotta. Alfredo Jannotta immigrated from Italy by way of London to Boston in 1865 where he taught voice at the New England Conservatory of Music. He married his first wife, Alice Prudy and they had a son, Edward, before Alfredo moved to Cincinnati in 1868. Alfredo spent 12 years in Cincinnati teaching vocal performance as well as conducting the Cincinnati Choral Society and organizing the first Cincinnati orchestra. He moved back to Boston in 1881 but moved to St. Paul, Minnesota, in 1882 and finally to Chicago in 1888 where he established himself as a vocal teacher. While teaching in Chicago, Jannotta taught vocal lessons to Stella Skiff whom he married in 1893. Skiff was the daughter of Iowa businessman Vernon William Skiff and his wife, Mary Frances Coffin. Her brother, Frank Vernon Skiff founded the Jewel Tea Company which later grew into a national grocery store chain including Jewel, Osco, Eisner, and White Hen. Skiff continued her singing career after marrying Jannotta and briefly taught lessons. Between 1894 and 1898, she gave birth to sons A. Vernon, Francis, and Joseph. Between 1917 and 1918, Stella adopted three foster daughters, Margaret, Marion, and Betty (Elizabeth). In the early 20th century she began taking an active interest in causes including the suffrage movement and socialism. Stella Jannotta joined the Chicago Political Equality League (predecessor to the Chicago League of Women Voters) in 1907. She wrote for the propaganda arm of the organization, including a 1916 article entitled "Public Opinion" which she revisted several times over the following decades. A. Vernon Jannotta, the oldest son on Alfredo and Stella, served in the United States Navy in both World War I and World War II. He rose through the ranks of the Navy and the Naval Reserves, eventually retiring as a Rear Admiral in 1954. Jannotta received several military honors including the Navy Cross, Silver Star, two Bronze Stars, and a Purple Heart.  Jannotta began working at the Jewel Tea Company in 1919 and held several positions at the company for the next 50 years. He also held several executive positions or held stakes in several companies including Lehman Brothers, Motor Institute of America, Tapp, Inc. and Consolidated Trading Corporation. (Ina Belle) Description An account of the resource William H. Herdman, a blacksmith and early resident of Mount Vernon, Illinois, was the son of Robert and Jane Hanson Herdman. He married Mary A. Kirby, the daughter of Moses and Lydia Williamson Kirby. Herdman moved to Mount Vernon from Pennsylvania in 1850. In 1865 his brother, Thomas, a Methodist Episcopal minister, came from Ohio to head the Methodist Seminary at Mount Vernon which closed down during the Civil War. He remained there for four years and then acted as minister for several different churches in the area. In 1890 he was elected president of McKendree College. He remained at the college in various positions for approximately ten years. William Hamilton and Mary had eight daughters including Ada I. Herdman, Ina B. Herdman, Florence V. Herdman, Ellen A. Herdman Gowenlock, Henrietta "Etta" Herdman Doud, Octavia L. Herdman Huff, and Grace Herdman Harris. Henrietta "Etta" Herdman married Menzer Fairchild Doud of St. Louis, Missouri, a newspaper writer for various papers in Kansas and Missouri. Their daughter, Grace, was a school teacher and served as chairman of the Missouri State Association of Childhood Education in 1939. Their oldest daughter, Ada, was also a schoolteacher and taught in the Mount Vernon area for many years. Henrietta Doud's youngest daughter, Virginia, provided many of the photo identifications on the photographs. Title A name given to the resource Adolph Berger Collection Subject The topic of the resource Berger, Adolph, 1820-1912 Physicians Illinois--Lebanon German Americans Description An account of the resource Adolph Berger, a German physician who practiced medicine in Lebanon, Illinois, was born about 1820 and educated at Heidelberg, Germany. While a student, he became attracted to the 1848 revolutionary movement. Following the failure of the revolutions in Germany, a number of political refugees – “Forty-eighters” – emigrated to the United States. Frederich Hecker, one of the refugees who had been a hero of the German revolution, had settled in the Belleville, Illinois, area. His presence attracted a number of young Germans to the Belleville-Lebanon area. Berger arrived in Lebanon in 1848 and began his medical practice on June 13, 1850. He continued to practice medicine in the same locality for the next fifty-three years. Berger was active in civic affairs. He was a member of the St. Clair County Medical Society, Lebanon Chapter No. 62 of the Royal Arch Masons, Lebanon Town Board, Lebanon Board of Education, and a committee that coordinated the financing of the Mascoutah and Lebanon Railroad. Berger also supported the Lebanon public library and the local German singing societies. Like many of the 1848 German immigrants, he resisted the temperance and prohibition movement. Berger belonged to the Presbyterian Church. Army Armed Forces--Officers Description An account of the resource Lewis Baldwin Parsons arrived in Illinois in 1844, setting up a law practice in Alton. Two years later he became the Alton city attorney, a position he held for three years. He married Sarah Green Edwards, niece of Governor Ninian Edwards, in 1847. After her death in 1850 shortly after giving birth to their daughter Sarah, Parsons married Sarah's sister, Julia. The second marriage resulted in two children, Charles and Julia. During the Civil War, Parsons served as assistant quartermaster in the Union Army, becoming the  Chief of Rail and River Transportation. In this role, Parsons brought order and efficiency to the business of supplying the western armies with steamboats and barges by eliminating the charter system of hire. Parsons served as a Ohio and Mississippi Railroad manager from 1857 until 1878 and as a farmer on his land in southern Illinois called Elmwood Farm.   Parsons was prominent in the councils of the Democratic Party for several years.  He served as vice-chairman of the Democratic State Central Committee of Illinois in 1876.  In 1880, after receiving considerable public attention as a potential gubernatorial candidate, Parsons ran for lieutenant governor of Illinois. Parsons was also a delegate to the National Democratic Convention in 1884.
