<text>Monticello College first began as the Monticello Female Seminary in 1838. Founded by Captain Benjamin Godfrey to provide education for women, the school offered two years of classes for attendees based on the idea that “if you educate a man you educate an individual; educate a woman and you educate a whole family.”

Godfrey selected Reverend Theron Baldwin to serve as the first head of the Monticello Female Seminary. In 1867 Harriet Haskell became principal, a position she held until her death in 1907.

On November 4, 1888, a fire broke out in the building and consumed the entire structure. Ms. Haskell and the school's Board of Trustees successfully fundraised for a new building and rebuilt the school in two years.

The school's leadership made the decision to close the school in 1970 with the final class graduating in 1971. Lewis and Clark Community College completed the purchase of the Monticello College campus in 1972.

The finding aid for the Monticello College (Godfrey, IL) Records at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library may be found at https://illinois.as.atlas-sys.com/repositories/2/resources/545.

The finding aid for the photographic Monticello College Collection at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum may be found at https://illinois.as.atlas-sys.com/repositories/3/resources/4702.

</text>

Ogilvie spent his career as a lawyer working in private practice and for the federal government including serving as a special assistant to the United States Attorney General. In 1961, Ogilvie was elected as sheriff for Cook County. Five years later he was elected as president of the Cook County Board of Commissioners.

Ogilvie won the 1968 Illinois governor's race and took office in Janury 1969. During his tenure, Ogilvie successfully fought for the introduction of a state income tax and launched the "New Illinois" program which promoted economic growth via revenue sharing. Under Ogilvie, Illinois held a constitutional convention in 1970. Ogilvie lost his 1972 bid for reelection to Dan Walker.

The finding aid for the Richard B. Known as “Deacon” because of his pulpit-style oratory, Davis fought for civil and women’s rights, fair employment practices, and the care and protection of children. I have carefully examined his papers, and he has excellent testimonials from Gen. Guyon, Bern & Kossuth. A first Lieutenant in the Austrian Hussar he rose to the rank of major in the Hungarian Hussars (the first cavalry in the world) He ought to have a captaincy at least in a cavalry regiment. Gen. Prentiss knows him well and speaks highly of him. He refers also to Gov. Wood, Browning & Gen Singleton. The cavalry drill is a severe one, and but very few in the State could instruct in it.

                <text>
Belleville. Sept. 3. 1861.

Dear Governor

My friend Mr. Jn. Hay, leaving the office of State Attorney and a very good practice, has concluded to join the army. He is a very good and earnest Republican and has done the hardest kind of service ever since 1854. I think we have now about enough Democrats in high position in the army (for which I was, as yo well know) and we may as well now take care of our friends.

His highest aim is major-ship, and if there are still field officers places at your command, I would strongly recommend him.

Yours very truly

Dear Sir

I understand that Gov. Hoffman offers to make up another German Regiment. The experience in St. Louis, where Fremont has authorized the making up of several Regiments at the same time has shown the great impropriety of such as course. He has now some ten fragments of Regiments, and not one full yet. He has now issued an order to consolidate them thereby disappointing a great many men, and in fact imposing on some, who enlisted under particular men as officers, who are now thrown out. I would suggest not to commission Gov. Hoffman to raise men, until my Regiment is full. I will get this week two fine Companies from Sigels former Regiment (Illinoisans) who have fought at Carthage & Springfield, but who prefer now to enroll in Illinois. I expect to have at the end of the week some 6 Companies in Camp. I have offers of parts of Companies from various parts of the State but it takes time to consolidate them and fix them up. Direct the Adjutant General to send me a certain number of Passes, the names of Captais to be left blank. I have an immense trouble with the Railroad unless I have such passes. There is no telegraph office open

here now, and I cannot therefore telegraph for passes. I beg you to attend to this, as it will help me most materially.

                <text>
Belleville Sept. 9.1861.

Yours very truly
