</p><p>Sir, I have a son, Ira A. Batterton, in the U.S. service in company “K” of the Eighth regiment Illinois volunteers who has been during his enlistment on “detached service” as Col. Oglesby's secretary, and is now acting adjutant during the temporary absence of the regimental adjutant, Mr. Clark.
</p><p>He is my only son and I have taken much care to render his education and moral culture of the highest order. So far in life he has proven well worthy of that attention. He is now 24 years of age and stood first in the large graduating class of 1860 at Antioch College Ohio. He is attentive to business, industrious, prudent, honest and pious, and since the beginning of this war, he has become one of the first class of Drill Masters and Military Tacticians as may be found in a great many regiments in the volunteer service. As I am somewhat acquainted with the military, having been a captain in the Kentucky, militia in the war of 1812, I am desirous that he should secure a position in the service of the volunteers of Illinois which

<p>will afford him the proper field for the exercise of his capabilities as well as to prove his worthiness of promotion. The enthusiasm of a devoted patriotism prompted him in the hour of his country's peril to be ready and willing to serve her even as a private though meriting a higher rank. He has so thoroughly acquired a practical of military affairs that he is fully capable and able to serve in any position in a regiment with honor to himself and a due return of service to his country. His thorough acquaintance with military affairs and business talent would eminently fit him for an Adjutant or any other of the regimental officers positions.
</p><p>I write you these facts, that true merit and worth may be encouraged and promoted should an opportunity be given you to do so. Any information relative to the above statement concerning my son may be given you by Colonel Oglesby, as I presume he is well acquainted with my son's history in the army.

</p><p>Capt Davis is about to start to Springfield for the purpose of collecting his claim, and also for the further object of seeing if your Excellency can give him a position somewhere in the service suitable to his merit. He has been with me several months and I have found him to be an officer of most superior attainments.
</p><p>Having been a Cavalry Officer of fifteen years experience he would naturally prefer some position in that branch of the public service. If you Excellency cannot give him a position in that branch I would respectfully urge the propriety of placing him somewhere in the artillery Regiments, which are being formed. His military talents are so marked, that I feel satisfied that he would grace any position which Your Excellency might assign him.

</p><p>Permit me to introduce to you my friend James W. Davis, who is now on his way to Springfield, Ills. Capt Davis has served as a Cavalry Officer in the Regular Army for twelve of fifteen years. Some time last fall at the invitation of Governor Yates, he came out West, for the purpose of drilling the Cavalry Forces of that State. He has been with me the largest portion of this time, and I do not hesitate to say that he is a most accomplished and efficient officer.
</p><p>He would be of great service to any regiment to which he might be attached. Before this war broke out, Capt Davis resigned his commission in the army, and was living in Philadelphia. He now desires some position in the Western Service suitable to his eminent merit. I write to you requesting that you would so much favor me, as to write
