<text>Abraham Lincoln replies to a June 19, 1860, letter from Joshua R. Giddings, an Ohio abolitionist congressman. Lincoln apoligizes for his failure to make his reply earlier due to illness in the family. Lincoln agrees that the suggestions Giddings made in his letter are important and he appreciates them. He writes that "If I fail, it will be for lack of ability, and not of purpose." Mr. Tuck sent Lincoln a note written by Giddings which Lincoln answered; but since Giddings did not mention the reply, Lincoln is afraid that he did not receive it. According to Basler 4:80-81: Giddings' letter of June 19 suggested that Lincoln follow the example set by John Quincy Adams in not answering any questions upon which he was expected to act as president until he was elected, and further that he should say to applicants for office that at the proper time he would select his cabinet and leave each secretary responsible for appointments in his department. The letter is marked private in the top left corner.</text>

Messr W. S. Douglas & Bro.

I have received a letter from Mr. Leland of Boston, dated Septr 18th 1860; and in which he says that he will settle with you on the terms you first proposed - . The first proposition was made to Mr Leland by letter signed by S. Christy, and dated about June the 4th 1856.

Mr Leland says he is not authorized to do more. By that letter you were to give up possession & title to the land on the 1st of March AD 1862. You were to pay taxes for 3 years, and give to Leland all the improvements on the land - made or to be made.

Gentlemen,

a pecuniary crisis is upon us and probably you had better accept now Lelands acceptance of your own proposition.

This is a matter however for you to think about. Please write to me and say what you will do - nothing less and nothing more. Leland has gone as far as he intends to go. Taking into consideration the pecuniary crisis which is now in our midst, bankrupting us, I think you had better compromis on the terms you first offered through Mr Christy. Answer quickly

Yours Truly

Messr W.

Yours Truly

                    <text>
Springfield Jan 26/61
I arrived here, at the Capitol of the great Prairie State of Illinois this morning after an all nights ride in the car
The Legislature is at work which brings a great many people from all parts of the State in the city, and not only that but I suppose you know that Old Abe Lincoln lives here, and his visitors alone are enough to eat up any ordinary sort of a city. Judge Fort of Lacon (you probably know him) came down with me, he and our representative to the

Legislature with two wild fire eaters from the very blackest part of the South went with me or I with them to see "Old Abe" - A nigger came to the door and showed us in. "Abe" who, seated beside a huge pile of letters as high as a mountain (I presume all from [ours?] after office) rose and welcomed us with a good jolly shake hands. We stayed about half an hour, during all of which the old fellow went on talking so that one of us could hardly get a word in edge ways. I think he almost converted the "fire eaters" into Black Republicans. however their opinion of him was very much altered. You would

explode with laughter to hear him tell about the southerners trying to assassinate him. He has got stacks of preserved fruit and all sorts of such trash which he is daily receiving from various parts of the South sent to him as presents. He had several packages opened and examined by medical men who found them to be all poisoned. Not time to write more this evening. Will likely go to Jacksonville the first of next week. If I cant hear from you I think I take revenge by making you read lots of my scratching. Your affectionate son, Joshua Allen

                <text>

Dear Cousin Thee sees I keep at my old habits of writing for 40 years but it is prose now, not poetry I hope thy patience will hold out as I am nearly through After bringing the account down to father's death, I shall give thee a short sketch of Mother's history which will close it I thought I would send to thee, (being the oldest Townsend) what I know of the family and perhaps the children, at some day might become interested in it I am copying it, of evenings from a long history of my own life, which I have written for my two young ones I would give a big price for a history of our folks 5 or 6 generations back We all continue [well?] Sally Townsend of Wm is down stairs but don't go out yet had a fall on the ice, in her own yard some 3 weeks ago, then a [illegible] spell She is feeble Robt A. D. and Joshua, and myself, all at our usual avocations

Wm M [G?] gets out to the Rail Road but complains, at times of a numbness in his feet. (which don't look very well) Sally was born June '88 she is 4 1/2 years older than William (whose birth, thee has)
Thy letter just came, as I am sending this. I am glad thee likes it. After I have got through the History, I will send (separately) some little memorandums which, he left, of his different spells of sickness It seems he had 5 or 6 of them, before I knew him. It was not worth while to send stamps. I did not want that
[Lydia is all, well?] I have faith that our public troubles will come out right I admire the great dignity of the North no bluster nor gasconade but ready "to put in an oar" at the proper time I think people will be agreeably disappointed in Lincoln I voted for [[illegible]Everett, being our only chance in Maryland [illegible] like spring I shall write every few days affly Richard H. Townsend

I received your kind letter of last week & was very glad hear from you & the rest of the family. I had intended to have went out this evening but I got from the store rather late & before we finished supper Theodore came in & spent part of the evening so after he left I thought I would write you & go out to morrow night perhaps you think where.

Cousin Richard got home from Salem on Wednesday afternoon & left home the next morning & does not expect to be back any more until Saturday.

Whereas an insurrection against the Government of the United States has broken out in the States of South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Florida, Mississippi, Louisiana and Texas, and the laws of the United States for the collection of the revenue cannot be effectually executed therein conformably to that provision of the Constitution which requires duties to be uniform throughout the United States:

And whereas a combination of persons, engaged in such insurrection, have threatened to grant pretended letters of marque to authorize the bearers thereof to commit assaults on the lines, vessels, and property of good citizens of the country lawfully engaged in commerce on the high seas, and in waters of the United States:

For this purpose a competent force will be posted so as to prevent entrance and exit of vessels from the ports aforesaid. If, therefore, with a view to violate such blockade, a vessel shall approach, or shall attempt to leave either of the said ports, she will be duly warned by the commander of one of the blockading vessels, who will endorse on her register the fact and date of such warning, and if the same vessel shall again attempt to enter or leave the blockaded port, she will be captured and sent to the nearest convenient port, for such proceedings against her and her cargo as prize, as may be deemed advisable.

And I hereby proclaim and declare that if any person, under the pretended authority of the said States, or under any other pretence, shall molest a vessel of the United States, or the persons or cargo on board of her, such person will be held amenable to the laws of the United States for the prevention and punishment of piracy.

A Proclamation.

Preamble

And whereas an Executive Proclamation has been already issued, requiring the persons engaged in these disorderly proceedings to desist therefrom, calling out a militia force for the purpose of repressing the same, and convening Congress in extraordinary session to deliberate and determine thereon:

lawful occupations, until Congress shall have assembled and deliberated on the said unlawful proceedings, or until the same shall have ceased, have further deemed it advisable to set on foot a blockade of the ports within the States aforesaid, in pursuance of the laws of the United States and of the law of nations in such case provided.

In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand, and caused the seal of the United States to be affixed.

<text>Joseph Proctor writes to his brother John, about the state of Americans in England on the eve of the Civil War. Proctor is pro-Union. He informs his brother that the English government proposes a "strict new treaty" and will likely find "some pretext" to interfere "in our quarrel with the South." Joseph feels he has been advised not "to remain in this country." He needs $400-500 to close up his affairs. It is costly "to keep up appearances in this country." Some Americans have lost their jobs and are going home. Most actors are not getting any share of the thearter revenue with attendance down so. Joseph plans to act with Douglas in two weeks at his 'Eastern Opera House & Pavilion' starting on June 17th. He asks his brother to find a person to carry sovereigns, no, make that American gold, to him at 28 Surry St., Strand. Geo. Peabody & Co. will hold remittances for sixty days while others charge a steep fee for foreign exchange. Many men are out of work in the manufacturing cities here. This war is sad, but "providence" brought it. Joseph asks his brother to destroy this letter and not to tell the women all of this dire news because it may become too public. Part of Proctor's letter is written in a cross-hatch style on blue paper. The date of this letter is from the context only.</text>

My brother, Carter B. Harrison is very anxious to procure a Comsn as 2 Lieut in the Reg. Army of the United States. He is now bearing his musket as a private in one of the Ohio Regts in Western Va. Some family reasons combine with his own inclination to make such an appointment a matter of desire to him & to us. He is a young man of unexceptionable habits & of good appearance if a brother is compelled to bear the testimony . I do not know the No. of his Rgt. but he is in Capt Dodds Company, which was recruited at Oxford O. Where he was attending college. May I ask you to make this a personal matter?

I have written to Lane & Colfax & they will I think aid you, if it is a matter of any such difficulty as to require a combination.

I hope to be able to take up the note I owe you before long. I exceedingly regret that I should have put you to any inconvenience & had I known that you would be in any great need of the money I would have looked to some other source for it
