Keller began his working career as a school teacher and principal in Ava, Illinois, before becoming a lawyer and eventually working in the mining industry in the western United States and Mexico. Keller represented southern Illinois as a member of the Illinois State Senate (1913-1917) where he advocated for old-age pensions, woman’s suffrage, pure food and drug laws, and the eight-hour day. He served five terms in the United States House of Representatives (1931-1941). While in Congress, he was a member of the liberal bloc that supported New Deal legislation; introduced railroad retirement pension legislation; sought relief aid for Southern Illinois and envisioned Crab Orchard Lake project on a grand scale. He unsuccessfully campaigned for re-election in ever election between 1940-1948 with the exception of 1946 when he was in Mexico as a special adviser to the United States Ambassador.

Kent E. Keller's papers are part of the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library collection. The finding aid for this collection may be found at: http://alplm-cdi.com/chroniclingillinois/items/show/369.

Photographs in this collection include images of miners at work on several projects including the construction of Mount Rushmore, the Lincoln Tunnel, Skyline Drive, and Radio City Music Hall; oil well drilling; and family photos.</text>

                    <text>
Corinth Mississippi

Aug 14th 1862.

To His Excellency, Richard Yates:

Governor of Illinois

Dear Sir:

Some time in Aug. 1861, I wrote you, asking the acceptance of a Cavalry Company from Edwards County Ills. In answer, you wrote, that you would; and that said company must report at "Camp Butler" in fifteen days from teh date of Communications recd. from your Adjt. Genl.

At the time of receiving said communication Capt Chas. Churchill was completing his compy - already accepted by your Excellency, and I did not think it prudent to do anything with mine, as it would conflict with the completion of his. Consequently I delayed my operations until that was accomplished. which occupied two weeks after the reception of said communication. I then abandoned entirely my personal business, and put forth every effort to complete this Cavalry Company. Very soon after the commencing of the recruiting a difficulty [turned?] up, and if not removed, would result in the entire failure of the Company.

It was that of furnishing Horses. I immediately Expressed you a Letter stating following facts = first, that it would be imposible, to raise at that time a Cavalry Company - we furnishing all the Horses. I stated to you that men were plenty and willing, to join Cavalry, but not Infantry, but each one could not furnish his Horse. I asked you if the State could furnish me with a sufficient number of Horses to mount the remainder of this Company. we furnishing fifty. A few other statements were made in my communication, which I do not now remember. I waited patiently for three weeks your reply. in the mean time - exhausting almost every means to complete this compy. thinking probably you would answer favorably, and we could immediately report as directed in your acceptance Letter. I had been urged by a Capt Jas M. Pomeroy, then traveling through Southern Ills. as Recruiting Office with Authority from J.H. Sam. His proposition to me was, to go into a Regt he was recruiting, with Head Quarters at Quincy Ills. Of course it was my impression it was to be an Ill. Regt. He stated to us that the Regt. was accepted by Govt., & would go immediately into active Service; and that Horses, Equipments Arms, & Clothing, were all furnished, & awaiting

our arrival at that place. I had waited three weeks or more for your Excellency's Reply, and had not recd. one word. This Capt Pomeroy urged us to accept his proposition, and said it would be impossible for the State to furnish said Horses I asked. I not thinking for one moment that a Regt. would be allowed to recruit a Regt. for any other State, than the one in which it was rectuited. I had enrolled a good many men, & they were becoming impatient. and finally his proposition was accepted; and we started on the 21st of Oct. '61 for Quincy Ills. On our arrival they things were not as they were expected to be! The Mustering Officer had been suddenly called over into Missouri. & Capt. Pomeroy - he having been with us nearly from the time of my acceptance of his proposition - said, "we should have to go onto St Joseph Mo. where in all probabillity the Mustering Officer Lieut. Chas. Bowman would be found". After arriving there, he had rec'd another "sudden" call to Ft. Leavenworth Kas. On arriving there, we were Mustered into the Service - &, before we knew it into the 11th Kas. now the 2nd Kas Vols. I, of course, was "mustered in" with the rest of the Boys

[Aug 14 1862]

as Private, and there was no alternative but to bear it until a favorable opportunity for a transfer. With but a short intermission it has been one continued rangle in the Regt. - And it is the unanimous request of the men & officers for your Excellency to do every thing your power to be transfered from the Kansas to Ills. Troops. for we desire, & have done. to be identified with the Troops of our own State. We deem as a right; for with but a very few exceptions the entire company is from "Old Edwards" County Ills. And make this statement of facts as a ground work for a transfer, and as explanation of the course pursued. The Compy. is Co. "B" 2nd Regt. Kas. Vols. I have been here on detached service - commdg. 2nd Kas Battery, but will soon be relieved from that duty & returned to duty in my company in 2nd Regt. Kas. Vols. If myself & Compy. cannot be transfered, I would be willing to occupy almost any position in an Ills Regt. if my own individual transfer. Assuring you that a speedy compliance to our request will satisfy and make many hearts glad. We remain Respy. your Obt. Servt.

H. Hopkins. Capt. Co. "B" 2nd Kas Vols.

Ansd. Aug 23.

Dear Governor,

I have sent you today a copy of the last Journal to shew you what we are doing here against that gigantic Swindle by courtesy called the "New Constitution. There is no editor of the Journal now, as Mr Barden has no time and no experience to devote to that department.

This week I took charge of the Journal myself and wrote all the editorials in it in all political subjects, including the Constitution - There is also an article of mine in reply to the slanders circulated by Democrats and the Sentinel

as well as Register and Times. Next week I will have the letter, which appeared in the Journal (Springfield) republished in the Jacksonville Journal. Since last Friday John Strong and myself have raised over $20 - and with it got printed and mostly circulated 5000 Handbills against the "New Constitution" - They have been supplied to almost every reading voter in this County, and I have sent thousands to Cass, Menard, and Scott Counties and John has sent some to Greane - I am speaking some, but as I am not very well (my thoat troubles me) I can not speak as much as I would desire - I spoke at Bethel last night, shall speak

P.S. I send you one of our hand bills H. J. A.

at [illegible] tomorrow evening, & once or twice on Saturday at Naples on Monday evening - Many Democrats are against it - I think at least 100 in the County - Our men are almost unanimous against the Constitution - Woff (a lawyer of Concord) being the only one I know for it - Unless they get some of our Dutch & Portuguse (which I hope they will not) we shall cut down their majority, much I think - Can't it be arranged so that many, if not all, of John King's Co. at Camp Butler shall have a chance to vote here? I don't know how the Co. stands politically- Our Republicans are wide awake and hopeful of the result - I have got along finely in my office as State's Atty - The Democratic Paper at Carrolton complimented me highly, so did the one at Hardin, Calhoun Co, Yours &c

Hon Richard Yates

This I respectfully suggest is wholly unnecessary as it would put the Co. to great expense, and so far as the people are concerned they have made their choice. I enclose Schedule of Votes from the paper of that Co.

Dear Sir:

At the election held in the County of Randolph in this State, in November last Daniel Reiley was elected by the people a delegate to the Constitutional Convention. John A Nelson his Competitor having 1110 votes Reiley 1266 " The Cavassers and County Clark rejected for slight informalities in the returns of Certain Precincts the Vote of those precincts, whereby they Seek to justify granting a certificate of election to Mr Nelson.

Mr Reiley has notified Mr Nelson that he will control his seat in the convention & is proceeding to take the testimony, having employed myself and others as his counsel.

I am informed by letter from chester that Mr Nelson has sent his resignation to you & it is believe thereby seeks to induce you to order a new election. This I respectfully suggest is wholly unnecessary as it would put the Co. to great expense, and so far as the people are concerned they have made their choice. I enclose Schedule of Votes from the paper of that Co.

Yours truly

H K S O Melveny
