Since then they have buried a dashing little boy which affected seriously the Health of Mrs. Hamer who was within a few weeks of childbirth, which is always a severe ordeal for her Health, one which her friends always fear will end her days. Under these circumstances she has given birth to her child, but such is her condition that it certainly will not do for her husband to leave, I think she would hardly survive it. Mr Hamer I learn as sent his resignation in; and now on consultation we are really Hoping that you will fill the vacancy by the appointment of Rev Charles Atkinson, he is certainly thee <hr /> man. He is an Irish Man, with Mind, vigor, energy Patriotism. and talent which certainly will make its mark if he can but have a command in the Army. All of his soul has been in our cause since the war opened, and his powers in the pulpit in behalf of our cause and our Army has lost him his place as a Minister. He has been in the Hospital 9 months and there has not been at any time a hope of his getting well (afflicted with sore eyes) all we want is instructions how to move to obtain his release; his wife was with him at one time but could not effect any thing. He should have been discharged 8 months since. We know it does not rest with you but you or the Adgutant can instruct us. Mrs Barron informs that her husband writes that he was illy treated after he hand over the letter. I expect you received a large number of letters on this <hr /> Subject of such Soldiers; and probably often annoyed; but I am told by a soldier now at home on a visit who has been out nearly two years, that there are freequently Hospitals kept running with a few soldiers only, (& they should be either sent to Camp or discharged,) merely to hold a paying position for a few quacks who should also either be discharged or made to sholder a musket. Paris Ills. Oct 15th/64 Gov Yates Dear Sir. We are labouring hard and using all the means at our command to carry the approaching election. But have fears of our ability to do so. It is the unanimous request of the union men of this vicinity, that the two companies remaining at Little Rock of the 62nd Regt (Col Trues Command) also the Company of the 5th Cavalry that went from Cumberland County be Furloughed & brought home in time to vote in the approaching election, about 70 of Trues men belong to Edgar 100 of them to Coles & about 50 to Moultrie. We think the addition of these voters will make all safe in our counties securring the County & State office, also, Our Congressman. We understand Gen Ogelsby & yourself will be with us on the 28th. It is the unanimous request of the union men of this vicinity, that the two companies remaining at Little Rock of the 62nd Regt (Col Trues Command) also the Company of the 5th Cavalry that went from Cumberland County be Furloughed & brought home in time to vote in the approaching election, about 70 of Trues men belong to Edgar 100 of them to Coles & about 50 to Moultrie. We think the addition of these voters will make all safe in our counties securring the County & State office, also, Our Congressman. We understand Gen Ogelsby & yourself will be with us on the 28th. Richard Yates Govenor of Illinois <pre> Dear Sir, </pre> <pre> I desire to call your attention to the fact that in the preliminaries for a draft there is no arrangements for a division of this city and precinct to be drawn by wards - I learn that Capt westlake says it is now to late to do this - - If the division is not made the draft will bear unjustly on the wards that have already furnished a large proportion of the men already enlisted and besides it will work injuriously </pre> <hr /> to our political interests one ward in our city containing the largest number of voters has a large Copperhead majority - and has (as you may infer) furnished but few men. These Copperheads remain at home and ought to be compelled to bear at least some portion of the burdens of the war. This cannot be without the draft (illegible) is made by wards. <pre> A Petition will go up to Col Oakes. this morning to have this matter so Ordered will you please see to it that the right of Loyal citizens may be protected and that justice in part may be meeted out to some of these copperheads. </pre> <pre> Yours Respectfully </pre> <pre> H.
