Mr Lincoln long practiced in your Co. and with you; and must have left many foot prints on your shores. Give me any facts or [pitches] - Religion - Law - or Love-anything.

I wrote to Judge Scott a few days since, requesting of him some favors. I asked him to show you this letter, which I suppose he did. I want you and Mr Scott, if you please, to collect such facts of Mr Lincoln as you know to be true or justly believe to be true and to send to me. I don't care where the Events happened or the facts took place [nor?] when. Give me such facts as illustrate his character - mind - heart- soul. Let the facts be [law - ming?] on Love. Mr Lincoln long practiced in your Co. and with you; and must have left many foot prints on your shores. Give me any facts or [pitches] - Religion - Law - or Love-anything.

Joliet Ills

DEAR SIR:

Being recommended to us as a suitable agent to collect funds for the NATIONAL LINCOLN MONUMENT ASSOCIATIOIN, we take pleasure in handing you the inclosed commission as such agent.

We are convinced that a thorough and active canvass or your County will result in a handsome contribution to the funds of the association. In order that every contributor may receive the proper credit, we suggest that you keep a list of the names and residences of all contributing, with the amounts paid by each, and, at the close of your operations, forward the same to the Secretary of the Association for preservation and future reference.

Please report to the Secretary, (Hon. O. M. Hatch,) on the first of every month, the gross amount of your collections and remittances from the receipt of your appointment to that time, the amounts for the month preceding, the amount retained by you as commissions, and the amount in your hands due the Association.

Please remit to the Treasurer, (Hon. J. H. Beveridge,) by express or draft, as most convenient, as often as you may have sufficient funds to justify a remittance.

You will retain a commission of ten per cent. on all sums received by you.

Whenever you desire to relinquish your agency, please return your commission and list of contributors, with a statement of account, to the Secretary of the Association, and remit any balance then in your hands to the Treasurer.

You will pardon me about being solicitous about hearing from the results of your communications, with the friends to whom you proposed writing. With the most rigid economy which I am compelled to practise, I find it will be absolutely impossible to continue housekeeping on my present means two mont[h]s longer. Seeking retirement as a necessity, with my great sorrow upon me, it would be to me the greatest conceivable pain, that I should have to rent this place, to assist me, in living. With the sum, with the amount

of which you are apprised. I cannot attempt to struggle through the coming winter, with the requirements, which the winter necessarily brings. All I desire to know is, what prospect, there is of a change, or if you have been advised of any, please inform me so that I may make my arrangements. I can assure you, it will add, another pang, to my afflictions, if I have to give up for want of means to keep it up, my present situation. If so, my pride would not allow me to remain in a land, under so many obligations to my noble husband. I would go, with my son, where I could live retired & at less expense, far distant from here. Without hesitation in case of nothing being done, I shall proceed in a few weeks, to dispose of all my personal effects, which in the future will not be required. Please write me if you have heard any thing.

[continued on page 1 written sideways in margin]

My Dear Sir:

[continued on page 1 written sideways in margin]

believe me

most respectfully

Mary Lincoln.

My dear Sir -

I am sorry I was obliged to quit Boston without even a chance to say 'goodbye' to you, or to receive the '[pears?] and spelling book' which (the book) I am daily expecting - my friend Mr Tompkins having promised to send it to me.

This is the first opportunity I've had - since I left Boston - to acknowledge yr last kind letter, and even now I write in little less than agony; being somewhat crippled by a severe pain in my kidneys - an affliction which has troubled me many years, and which is aggravated by every little cold I take or any great exertion.

I cannot tell you, sir, how dearly I prize such

newspaper "puffings" and applauding audiences fail to [provide?].

I think sometimes I must be a little dead inside - then I feel [sated?] and weary of my good fortune, and believe myself to be the most ungrateful of animals. It is only when I turn to these few cherished letters that I feel myself

I am glad you were not disappointed with the 2d performance you witnessed - it only proves how little one can judge of his own work; I was terribly dissatisfied that evening.

I will certainly bring my darling to see Mrs Sargent - in the Spring, if life and health are granted us. I was obliged to leave her in New York, the journey hither - without
