April 19th 1868?

Dear Mr. Sargent:

I thought I should have seen you ere this-but I have had long rehearsals every day, and on Sundays have been compelled to act on to business connected with my New York theaters. Having now no wardrobe the few leisure moments I usually have between rehearsal and the play are employed in looking up the many little articles useful to my costumes, and so I have been kept on 'tenter-hooks' all this while. In a few days I hope to have the pleasure of driving out to see you.

I enclose tickets for my next performance of 'Hamlet'-I think after a change I act with more spirit and feeling than when wearied by routine, acting the same character successively for several nights is apt to make me dull and heavy and therefore I wished you to see me after having broken the monotony by acting other parts. I hope you will be able to visit the theater next Tuesday evening, and that I may not disappoint you.

With many kind wishes for yourself and family, believe me, most respectly and sincerely yours, Edwin Booth

P.S.-I do not hesitate to send these tickets, believing that you will grant me the privilege to do so when I tell you it affords me great pleasure.

From Edwin Booth, the actor

Dear Mr.

Hotel d'Angleterre
Frankfort A' Main
Dec 13th '68

My dear Mrs Slataper

In this distant land, how can I sufficiently express the great pleasure your kind letter, has afforded me! It is such a pleasure to be thus remembered, when we are separated from those we truly love!

I came to Frankfort, expecting to remain a week, and now Christmas is almost upon us. When I was reading "John Ross Browne's" description of a winter & very especially a "Christmas" in Frankfort, I then scarcely expected to be here, to witness & pass through similar scenes. It was in the famous Alleghanies last summer, that his account was read. Certainly I expect in no place on the habitable globe do they make greater preparations for these holy days, than in F. There appears more to tempt one here than elsewhere. The shops are very beautiful and [illegible] [illegible] Americans [illegible] said to

have increased the prices. We are considered in Europe (& very justly) a most prodigal people---and this place has become a great resort for more quiet Americans. We have quite a little colony, at our hotel---which is considered the aristocratic one in F. All the nobility stop here, Counts, Dukes & Dutchesses abound in the house, and on my table, their cards are frequently laid. Yet in consideration of poor health & deep mourning, I have of course accepted no dinner invitations & have kept very quiet. Popp, the most charming of all dress makers, who receives many orders from America and makes for the royal family of Prussia & all the nobility, has just made me up some heavy mourning silks, richly trimmed with crape. The heaviest blk English Crape here, is only in our money $1.50 cts per yard. think of it. when in war times---I once gave, ten dollars per yard, for the heaviest! [Herr?] Popp has made dresses for Queen Victoria's daughters so long that a [illegible] years since when [illegible rest of line]

at this house---she sent for him & of course he obeyed the summons. He is a very modest man & never speaks of it himself! How different some of our boastful Americans, would be! I like Frankfort exceedingly, the true secret is, I suppose, I am enjoying peace, which in my deepest, heart sending sorrow, I was not allowed in my native land! I find it quite as expensive here as in America & as I am urged by my physicians to proceed to Italy very soon---at least I expect to start about the 22nd of January & remain until 1st April. That fearful, sorrowful month, will be spent very quietly here on my return. I wish those dear eyes of yours could become clairvoyant & [visit?] sunny Italy---its churches, paintings & all objects of interest with me. What happiness it would be of you were only with me! I am beginning to realize, why it is, that Europe spoils so many men & [illegible] [especially?] women. There is [illegible next line]

which we do not dream of in America. My rooms are on the same floor with Consul Murphy & wife, Mrs Mason of N.Y. & Mrs General Robert Allen & daughter of U.S. Army. Mrs M. is the wife of the Organ Mason, a very superior woman, we are much together---yet the attraction is so different from what I feel towards you. Her children have been so long going to school here & she has been in Germany so much herself, that she has imbibed many of their philosophical ideas, which are often startling to me. She requires that softness of character, without which no woman can be lovely. Notwithstanding I like her, I can perceive that she has been demoralised, as we called our Army men often. On yesterday, two American gentlemen friends, called to see me, they asked me if I was homesick, I told them I pined for a glass of American ice water---the latter here is impossible & really dangerous to drink. Wine, of course is universally used & yet I have never seen a person the least [illegible] intoxicated [illegible] days

Since I visited a building one thousand years 1,000 years old to see the portraits of about fifty German Emperors, some of them older than the building. The chairs on which these men sat, the stone floors on which they trod, every thing, of course possesses a charm for me---as I advance in my travels, the interest will certainly increase. I am sending you, my dear friend, a tedious account [of?] my movements, write me, I pray you, and tell me what dear Mrs Gross & yourself are doing. The weather is so mild here, at present, that my fire has died out, so different, from your weather I suspect. I often hear from Robert & Mary---the latter writes me often calling me "Dear Mother"---and says she is so happy. Wonders whether I am not almost ready to return to them. Dear child, it may be a weary day, ere I recross the broad Atlantic, not that my thoughts will not be daily, hourly with [illegible] so dear [illegible]

I am convinced the longer I live that life and its blessings are not so entirely unjustly distributed, are when we are suffering greatly, we are inclined to suppose. My home for so many years, was so rich in love & happiness; now I am so lonely & isolated whilst others live on in a careless lukewarm state---not appearing to fill 'Longfellow's measure. "Into each life, some rain must fall." I have read his "Tragedies, there is no doubt, but what he us a spiritualist. Himself & Daughters are now in Paris. I hope we will all meet "somewhere". Taddie, has some little Christmas remembrances for your daughter & Mrs Gross---which I hope ere long, he will have an opportunity to send. He likes his school & is a most affectionate, amiable tempered child. he is recovering from his homesickness. Do write me so soon as you receive this---so that I may hear from you before I leave for Italy. With much love to all your family, Mrs Gross & husband I remain, with much affection

[line illegible]

                    <text>
Mary Lincoln

5 Have you received the letter I wrote you the first of the week? So our good friend Genl Schenck has left Paris – en route home. He is a most agreeable, warmhearted man & I have always liked him. I do not wonder that he could not exactly comprehend, the depth and extent of my sadness and desolation. None but my Heavenly father, can do that. Gen S. remembers me as a gay, cheerful woman, well dressed & surrounded by many persons. What a contrast, this presents dark picture.

6 His interest in my affairs – soon to be canvassed in Con carries much weight with it – not so great however in my estimation as the Phil members – all of them together will be formidable. If your own kind husband, would pardon my suggesting that if in the first commencement of the session – he would go to Wash & use his influence, it would be very greatly to my advantage. He would make friends for the measure & soften those, who might naturally oppose it – among the latter such men as Brooks, of N.Y. F Woods & others, whom your husband’s social position-would cause them to yield. And with these men - social recognition is a great deal if they are rich.

7 Sumner- I think was not in Wash, to judge by the papers, even the earliest part of this month, so my dear friend, he has not yet had time to reply to yours but never judge him, by his silence. how you would admire that man, if you knew him as I do. For the last eight years, he has been as a brother to me. I have had so many beautiful letters from him, but since he had such trouble about his wife - I fancy he writes to no one. Although I have seen him since. He has heart as soft as a woman towards those he likes & I happen to be one of the cherished few.

During the rebellion when the fearful war was raging, we were drawn all of us very closely together. We met quite as frequently, with pale faces and cheeks, hot with tears & since my darling husband passed away Mr. S. has wept as bitterly, whilst sitting by my side, over my terrible bereavement and what he considered his own great loss as few men could do. He is just as warmly interested as you are in my cause & in both cases - I am aware – it is a great deal. Thank Heaven for raising me up such friends in this the time of darkness. I will say no more – you will understand me.

[Page 4 continues with overlapping sideways writing which reads as follows]

Mr S– will most eagerly seek to cultivate your acquaintance – for he is very appreciative.

Your present noble conduct regarding the pending measure will so exalt you in Mr. Sumner’s estimation as well as your being a sister of Mr. Charles O’Neil of whom I have heard Mr. S speak so highly that if you are ever near him you will have a realizing sense of Mr S’s nobleness of soul – and general agreeability. You will observe that I am quite grateful.

                    <text>
Nice France, March 16th '69

My dear Mrs White:

Your letter recently received has afforded me much pleasure & believe me, in this far distant land, you are frequently remembered both in my thoughts & prayers. Past friendship, through the trying years of the war, and the fearful loss, we both have sustained in our dearly beloved husbands are ties, too strong for time or distance to sever.

Ill health rendered it absolutely necessary that I should come South, & by degrees, I find myself regaining strength. For sorrow, such as ours, there is [illegible] before the grave and Heaven, with reunion with our loved ones, can alone heal, bleeding, broken hearts. Whenever I am feeling so sadly, I lead a life of isolation & retirement, although I have been here several weeks, I am sure few or none are aware of it. I am not feeling sufficiently well in mind or body, to undertake Italy this winter. [Next?] winter, I shall try to come

down in Nov. The season is already so far advanced & nothing I could see could interest me in the terrible month of April. I feel that in a few days I must make the afforded return to my young son, who is now in Frankfort. When I visit Italy some months hence, it would be such a pleasure to have you as a companion. We could visit places of interest without being recognized. Of course, Americans abound everywhere--- & in my morning walks in the sunshine you can always recognise them

very often, by their loud voices so early, as ten or eleven in the morning, velvet costumes&c&cFull dress, when one is sight seeing or in quest of health & change, must certainly be a trial. After we have suffered heavy afflictions, life is at best, a fearful endurance. To me, every thing looks so desolate. I often wonder why I was spared, when my darling husband was taken, and to suffer so much too! I hope, my dear friend, you will write to me often. Please direct to Phillip, Nicoll, Schmidt, bankers, Frankfort a Maine---Germany. With apologies for so hurried a letter & with remembrances to your amiable family I

[written vertically across page 1]
remain always truly yours

Mary Lincoln

                <text>

                    <text>
Frankfurt – A. M.

Aug. 21st 69

My Dear Mrs. Slataper:

On my return from Scotland, three days since, I found your most acceptable letter quietly awaiting me written now, so many weeks since. Taddie & myself had been absent from this place seven weeks & have been so far north in Europe, as to see day light closing in upon us at eleven o’clock. PM and morning light, at 3 AM.

2 Our old & dear friend, Dr. Smith, 73 years of age & very feeble, anticipating that he will not live much longer & desirous of seeing us before his departure, insisted so much upon our visit to him this summer, that we concluded to do so. We went to London via Paris, remaining at the latter place only 5 days, but sight seeing every moment of our time. In London – the kind good old man came down by steamer & met us. There we also remained 5 days. Beautiful, glorious Scotland has spoilt me for every other Country. It appears to me, that

3 we saw every place, yet I presume we might remain five months there, continually travelling round, without doing so- We visited. Abbotsford, Dryburgh Abbey – passed six days in charming Edinburgh seeing oh so much! Glascow, journeys on the Clyde – all through the west of dear old Scotia, Burn’s birth place, saw the nook in the wall – where he first saw light. Went to Greenock – heaved a sigh over poor “Highland Mary’s grave – went out into the ocean – entered Fingal’s Cave visited Glencoe – Castles innumerable Balmoral – Dunsimore

4 the latter perfectly fairly land. Visited Glamis Castle – saw the room & the bed on which poor King Duncan was murdered – Stepped on the same step – that Mary Queen of Scots, jumped into the canoe from her prison home at Lochleven. I cannot begin to enumerate all the places of interest we visited.

Aug.

I am convinced that I shall never again be able to arouse myself to take such another interest in any other country, I may chance to visit. <text>
Sunday evening

Dec 5th 69

My dear Mrs Orne:

Three evenings since, "Taddie Lincoln Lincoln" mailed a letter to you, with Mr Sumner's, enclosed within it. I do so hope, you received the latter. Senator Fenton, is by this time, doubtless on the stormy deep. Knowing what a power he will be in the Senate, I wish very much, he has been present the first day of the session. He cannot certainly arrive in Wash---until the first

of the 2nd week---and are you aware that Congress---will only most probably remain in session about two weeks, ere they adjourn for the Christmas Holidays. So even if I had hope---that charming, but deceitful syren on my side---I could scarcely suppose any good, would be effected in my cause by the time, when happier people are rejoicing over their comforts---alas, alas, what can I again expect, but to be left out in the cold. For it has become very much so here---how is it with you?

Oh that we could be together this wintry night---for how very much, we would have to say to each other. I can readily imagine, that your good, kind husband is even now, in Wash and that his voice & influence will be excited to the utmost. I must acknowledge---a great weakness about wishing to see what our friend, Col Forney, will have to say, [dinna?] forget me, should you receive any of his papers. I am very glad---that the time has come---for Congress to meet so that for weal or woe---I shall not be long kept in ignorance perhaps it may be bliss.

I hope you have entirely recovered from your cold. Poor Gen Sickles I suppose, he, too, is watching & waiting. It cannot be---that he will not be confirmed. Is Laura going to school in Spain? What changes---time, brings to us all. I sometimes feel as if I had lived a century. "My life, is not dated by years." Taddie, as usual is hurrying me so I will close---with ever so much love to your daughters & yourself. I shall feel anxious until I learn, whether you have received Sumner's letter. You are a wicked woman to be carrying on so many flirtations---you must remember that you have

[written vertically across page 1]
a very handsome & agreeable husband in America.

In great haste hoping very soon to hear from you---I remain always your affectionate friend

Mary Lincoln

                <text>

[written vertically across page 1] a very handsome & agreeable husband in America.

In great haste hoping very soon to hear from you---I remain always your affectionate friend

Mary Lincoln
</text>
