Hon James H Orne:

My dear Sir:

When I explain my reason for writing this note upon your kind notice, with my impression of your great nobleness of heart, I feel assured, you will excuse the liberty I am taking.

Mrs Orne has frequently written to me, during the winter and has invariably assured me of

[Private written vertically across the page]

of the interest you are taking regarding Congressional action in my behalf. As you are doubtless aware, she is now in Italy & I have not heard from her since her arrival there. The details of my situation regarding pecuniary matters, would be too painful for me to write to you, from dear Mrs Orne, who in her kindness & sympathy, has proved an angel of light to me,I dare say, you have

[Private written vertically across the page]

heard exactly, in what manner I am compelled to live---both at home & abroad. Between my great sorrow, & humiliating surroundings, separated from a devoted husband; who always provided so comfortably & even luxuriously for me, you can imagine that the great change, is crushing me to the earth. The anxiety too, regarding what Congress will do for me---where it is so much required---has completely undermined my health, so much so---that the physician who has been attending upon me,

has urged me to go South. Alas, alas, it would be a sad story to reveal to him, that the wife of the man, whose life was so sacrificed in his country's service, has not the means to leave the place, where she now is. Dear Mr Orne, will you, in your great goodness, ascertain as you have the means of doing, whether the service of my great & good husband, will be recognised by his country. The silence so far, regarding, some relief for me in Congress - is

The details of my situation regarding pecuniary matters, would be too painful for me to write to you, from dear Mrs Orne, who in her kindness & sympathy, has proved an angel of light to me,I dare say, you have

heard exactly, in what manner I am compelled to live---both at home & abroad.

On coming home from court I found your excellent letter, dated the 3d inst; and now let me say I am much much obliged to you for it. With the letter I received your address. I shall read it soon carefully. I casually looked over it and what I saw & read pleased me. I am happy to know that my letter on Mr Lincoln's Religion gave you some insight into Mr Lincoln's nature. The letter is true: it will never be contradicted substantially. Mr Lincoln scorned all Theology – all the mechanics of Christianity – hated formalism & cant. Mr Lincoln was large – and charitable – deep & broad in his religious views If I ever visit Washington I shall most assuredly call and see you. I thank you again for your letter and add-

May 28th 1870

Hon. James H. Orne

My Dear Sir:

The letter and paper of May 3d, which you so kindly sent me, was received here a day or two since. Since that time alas, to judge from the report of the Senate Committee && there is to my mind, so troubled with anxiety & sorrow---but little chance of the noble work of the House being responded to---by the Senate. Mr Edmunds the Sen---(in the place of that good, noble & true gentleman, dear Senator Foote) appears vehemently determined---that cruel injustice

shall be rendered to the bereaved family of the man, who was above all others in the great work of the War. If I could possibly live, otherwise than to be a mortification to myself, I would not make the least request---at the hands of those---who could so ameliorate my sad condition. I am almost helpless---there are days when I cannot walk straight. I am unable to wait upon myself---from very frequent illnesses---as in the only plainest & most obscure way, I can keep myself---assuredly with my small means I cannot keep a servant. I wrote you, dear Mr Orne, a hurried but sincere statement of facts, a week since from Eger, en route here. Then I told you, what my oldest

son & myself, have always kept to ourselves---that so soon---as my senses could be regained---I had every [Wash?] & every other indebtedness---sent to me & out of every dollar---I could command---I paid to the uttermost farthing. In some cases, known by the the administrators---but in a very few---it was all done by ourselves my son & myself out of my money so that it should be said---that President Lincoln---was not in debt. This is one of the causes, why I am so straightened now---for living as we were compelled to, my husband not being a rich man & we had to pay enormous prices for every thing---those war times. When I now hear, from cruel---wicked reckless assertions---how rich I am---often wanting

for a meal---that I would daily offer a hungry way farer---If I could. my broken heart, cries aloud & I sigh more than ever to be at rest by my darling husband's side. Under any circumstances, I believe I should have hastened to settle any indebtedness against the estate, but being often told---that the remaining salary of the four years, would be given to the family. All I wished then was to die, if it had been Our Heavenly Fathers will---and the great sorrow & oftentimes cruelty---I have endured since, does not soften the aspect of life---or deprive it of its bitterness. Please write me on receipt of this a candid statement & your just views of the situation of affairs.

5
I wrote you on my letter from Eger that on receipt of the refusal of the Sen. Com to confirm the bill---it was deemed best by my physician & two or three friends, that I should come on here. My mind is in such a disturbed state and truth to say---I am so unpleasantly situated---so unable to place myself in quarters---that one hearing my name, should occupy---that I am uncomfortable here. My health is very poor---so much so, since I have been here, now one week---I have had to send for the old physician of the place, two or three times---no menial near to assist me, if I was dying. Will not this condition of affairs, be rectified by a people---who are the nobles of the earth. Could my

devoted & indulgent husband, ever have anticipated---such a return for the work of freedom & saving his country---from a rebellious foe! Whilst I am writing, I am in receipt of a letter from my young son saying that Mrs Orne & her family have arrived at Frankfort & he has seen them! I feel like flying back---but will certainly very much shorten my stay here---to return to see them. There never was such goodness & nobleness of heart, I believe in any other woman in the world, as Mrs Orne possesses. Her loving sympathy---has been a great comfort to me. I will write her at once. If she had written me, she would have been coming earlier than July to Germany---I would have waited for her. As it is---two weeks hence---I return to Frankfort.

[written vertically across page 1]
Hoping you will excuse this letter which in your great goodness---under the present trying circumstances I am sure you will---and earnestly requesting---your views of affairs & prospects in A---I remain most respectfully

Your Friend Mary Lincoln

My dear Mrs. White:

Your last kind letter has been received & I hasten to explain expressions that may have surprised you when I last wrote. I was then just recovering

from a very severe attack of heart complaint. There is no mistaking the symptoms of a complaint that has carried off so many members of our family - with so much less of grief, than I have been called upon to endure - a second physician

has since told me, that he thought my blood was turning to water & it was working its way to my heart - of course, I find myself gradually bloating, but my aching, broken, desolated life, may have to continue, longer than it is desirable, but I am advised to seek a much warmer climate, for the winter.

In the event of my son, not remaining here longer than Christmas - when for a few months he proposes a rest for himself for his young life, has been very greatly overtaxed, I have been thinking dear friend, of going to Florida soon after the first of Jany - to remain South until the latter part of April. Can it be that you will accompany me - if I do so.

All I write you, I am sure you will consider strictly private - and when I place my plan & proposal before you. I will trust to your noble heart & unfailing kindness, even if your ideas do not coincide with mine not to feel displeased. Of course, I cannot go alone & in my state of

mind, a congenial, sympathising companion, is every thing to me. Now, for my plans. If you will go with me & pass the winter, where we both may find distraction of mind, I will so gladly pay the way for us both every where we go - the board - South is so much less than N.Y. or Chicago, is

said to be half as little that each one of us can meet that separately. If you consent to going & the arrangement about my son's plans agree we can cross over to New Orleans & it may be extend our voyage to Havana & Cuba. All this is entirely entre nous - to be mentioned to no one - if you please. I want so much to be with you, for I feel

myself so utterly alone in all my wretchedness. Mine is the agony of a broken heart. Without my blessed, darling son, who was such a comfort to me I can scarcely live. My thoughts are continually in that bright world, where my beloved treasures are and where I trust, I may ere long be. Please write me at once. Ever your most affectionate friend.

The boxes were models of artistic carpentry & the packing was superlatively [done?]; the former are now demoralized and empty. I, like yourself, have been up to my eyes in dust and dirt, toting and storing books &c, and am set but 1/3 perfect in my arrangements; the library begins to look homey, and

My dear, dear Jervy -

Since the receipt of your last letter I have vainly tried to write to you - a dreadful presentiment held pofsefsion of me and daily I deferred saying what my heart yearned to speak. Yesterday I resolved that tomorrow should not pafs without a word of encouragement for you: alas! I did not dream that my fears were so near their terrible realization.

My dear friend, what can I say or do for you? The best of words afford but sorry consolation to a heart bereft of all that made its life of value. How uselefs then, how like a mockery must my feeble efforts seem when you most need the wisest counsel and that strength which only God can give!

You know my heart, Jervy; you know that it contains more than my lips can utter, and that it shall, 'till its last throb, retain sacred memories of that beauti

ful spirit that hallowed the artist's home and strengthened the husband's sometimes failing heart. Dear Jervy, let such memories still support you; let your soul, after its shock subsides, rise refreshed by the blefsed knowledge that her absence is but seeming -- that she is and will ever be more truly with your real self than when she wore the "vesture of decay". God comfort and strengthen you, my dear Jervy! and He will surely do so if you but bear in mind that 'tis not

only for those here who love and suffer with you, but for her, who -- elsewhere, but very near -- is hoping and praying anxiously for her dear husband, that you must be strong.

God blefs you all! is the earnest prayer of our hearts. Mary & Edwina write with me in the tenderest sympathy for you and your dear ones. Mrs. Vaux's note did not reach us until this morning.

Over more -- God blefs you!

I have nothing to write about – my wits are barren, but by way of a ‘hand-shake,’ & “God bless you, Jervy” – I send this to you.

Mary wrote a few lines to Mr. Vaux the other day, & sent them to [Rondout?] – not knowing where else to address the letter.

I long to see you, and yet-what could I do? A grasp of the hand, a deep look into each others’ eyes tell all that can be spoken.

My hope is, Jervy, that you will get to work as soon as possible. It seems heartless – but really

it is not so; a giving way to one's grief without thought to the anxious fears of those who love us, & who may be perhaps dependent on us in many more respects than we wot of – is selfish. Remember that and go to your work at once. There’s not a selfish fibre in your entire composition, and you must not let even a semblance of that quality alloy your pure metal. I’ll write occassionally – if my letters disturb you don’t read them – sometimes what is meant in kindness

gives most offence. I shall be here this & next week – then I return to New York to begin my engt at the Fifth Ave: - a letter from some of you folks to let us know how you are would be of comfort to us both.

Today your 26th came and I am glad that you threaten to take Mrs Vaux' place in case she cannot attend the play. I believe Gertrude would tell you to do just what most folks consider not altogether right under the circum

This is Friday; I won't have time, I fear, to wait for your reply -- therefore I will hold the 4 seats reserved for Monday up to the last moment. Businefs has not been vey good, nor has my

I see my father in [Brutus?]---so does Joe Jefferson, who knew him well, but neither he nor Mary, nor indeed anyone recognizes me in that picture. (If that sentence is very much ‘off color’ it will have to stay so.)

So, now good-night, my Jervy. I hope you will soon be here for a stay and that we may have many [smokes?] and growls together.

Do not let this [bore?]---or disgust you with what may seem my lop-sidedness of judgement.

I cannot judge at all correctly of likenesses---particularly of my own.

I shall be free all winter and shall endeavor to be sociable, and to cultivate friends & be decent. All our loves to you and [yours?]Edwin

We were all terribly ‘shook’

but thank God! no further bad results have ensued. Mary is all right again, & I am only occassionally scared, when I recall the horrible scene. It was really horrible! I tell you Jervy, none of my

many escapes from violent death (I think I’ve had a dozen!) ever impressed me so keenly with the sense of life’s uncertainty & the great goodness of Almighty God! Painful as the experience has been I hope I may never lose remembrance of it, but retain it as a check and guide through the rest of my journey.

I sent you a paper a day or two after the occurrence, it contained all the knowledge that

I hope to see you in three weeks, when I will give you all I shall then have gleaned of this affair. Our loves to you & yours

Chicago April 27th/79

Dear Jervy

For some time I have been trying to write to you but failed for want of matter, now I have something to tell---but already the papers have informed you of all that I do know concerning my wonderful escape, and I can but assure you of our safety and good health after such a shock as you may well imagine ours to have been. We were all terribly ‘shook’

but thank God! no further bad results have ensued. Mary is all right again, & I am only occassionally scared, when I recall the horrible scene. It was really horrible! Imagine me---made up ghostly white---as the dying Richard, contemplating the miseries of life; in a dark dungeon; waiting the death which came so frightfully near reality.

I sent you a paper a day or two after the occurrence, it contained all the knowledge that

can be extorted from the lunatic. The case will be up this week and I sincerely hope that he will be put out of reach of harm to others or himself.

I have a great many letters to write---all on this topic, and therefore you will not be mad at this unsatisfactory and hasty scrawl. I hope to see you in three weeks, when I will give you all I shall then have gleaned of this affair. Our loves to you & yours

Edwin
