Hamilton Sept 15th / 63 Hon Gov Yates Sir Duty to myself and family prompts me to solicit your aid in getting my second son discharged from the service of the United States. I am a widow with eight children six of whom are now with me, and five are small, the eldest of the five is 13 years old, the youngest two and and a half. The oldest one with me is James the son before mentioned, he enlisted about a year ago (against my will being under age) in Co. C 118th Ill Volunteers and during the siege at Vicksburg while out skirmishing he with the others were taken prisoners and taken round to Richmond and Annapolis [illegible] where they were parolled <hr /> and sent home and he is now in daily expectation of being exchanged and called back to his Reg. He has been very anxious to join his Reg but still feels that it is his duty to stay with his mother . On serious objection I had to his joining the army was his health, which is not improved and then I am getting to be advanced in years. I am 46 years old with poor health and small means I am renting a farm which I shall be unable to carry on without my sons assistance. My oldest son has been in the service over two years. He enlisted early in the rebellion. I yielded him up sorrowfully yet willingly mingled with a felling of pride that I could make so great a sacrifice to in so noble a cause. I still had a son left to assist me in support of my family, and I felt that it was his (my eldest son's) duty to respond to his country's call. But I cannot feel so with regard to my second son going for he is my main dependence. And now though you may not have the authority to grant his discharge, yet if you will use your influence to obtain it for him - my son, James H. My Dear Husband your old friend in Albany Prison Who would have thought when in days past and gone you visited our house and you and the Dr were such great friends that on the 4th of July 1865 he would be incarcerated within the walls of a prison, But so it is. This cruel slaveholders rebellion has made many changes in our Circumstances. Some are more happy others more unhappy and desolate. I am one of that number. I regret [illegible] [illegible] as it is. I must on this [illegible] Call your attention to the fact that while you surely enjoy all the privileges of an Hon American Citizen the Dr is in a felon's Cell and I his wife morn without consolation in his absence with But little hope of a better future. Here I am lonely and disconsolate But frew friends that I can call friends. I have found on lately one of the Dr's old friends that seems to take some interest for me and I get him to write this letter for me. I am in a lonely destitute condition and how to do, and what to do, is more than I know at this time. In a Conversation with my friend this morning being the anniversary of American Independence and American Liberty, He asked me if I could not think of some old friend of his that would have Some influence with the Presdent in his behalf. I named you and he Concluded he would write you a few lines, for me and try to get you to take a little interest in his behalf. I visited Washington City and Pres Lincoln (God Bless his soul) told me he must be sentenced for ten years according to Law, But that <hr /> as soon as the war was over he would be released. Now the war is over and prisoners are being release and I can see no reason why he can not be as well as many others, Now I do hope for former acquaintance sake if nothing more you will try to have him released, his punishment can't ameliorate the condition. Col Loomis' family and Dr Herod was never in a difficulty with any man a peaceable quiet Citizen, always attending to his own Business. You can do a great deal for him with Pres Johnson. Being a Senator, His Business is such that it requires his immediate attending. I can't attend to it for I don't know how. My Education is limited to almost none, my taxes must be paid and little family must be supported. [Illegible] it is not large. I do hope you will interest yourself for my sake and if you have the least Shadow of a prospect do inform me by the earliest opportunity, and if nothing can be done do the same for I want to know the best and the worst of his Case. I know I can't do anything but my friends, Master Masons & R.A. Masons can do something for distressed Mason's wife. If he can't be released or I can't get assistance from some source, I shall Certainly see hard times. My friend the writer of this is well acquainted with all the Circumstances when the Dr. after being duly Elected was suppersceded by E.W. Jones because he was sick and had to return home. House of Representatives Photographers Description An account of the resource Samuel Alschuler, judge of the U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit (1915-1936), was born in Chicago, Illinois, on November 20, 1959 to Bavarian-born Jacob and Caroline Stiefel Alschuler. After growing up and attending school in Aurora, Alschuler began practicing law at the age of twenty-two in 1881 and starting in the 1890s, served as a public servant for the rest of his life. As a Democrat, Alschuler won a seat in the Illinois House of Representatives in 1896. He became the House Minority leader in 1898, a position he held until leaving the House of Representatives in 1900. Alschuler unsuccessfully ran for Illinois State Governor in both 1900 and 1912. In 1915, President Woodrow Wilson recognized Alschuler’s potential and appointed him to the U.S. Court of Appeals 7th Circuit. Alschuler served as arbitrator during the meat packing labor dispute of 1918. During the coal labor problems of 1922, President Warren Harding also asked him to serve on a coal fact-find commission. Alschuler, uncertain if he could properly be a member of the commission while serving on the federal bench, chose to serve unofficially as a legal advisor to the commission. In 1925, he became the presiding judge of the U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, a position he held for nine years, and retired in May 1936. Alschuler was a bachelor until 1923, when he married the daughter of the Chicago clothing manufacturer Ella Kahn. On November 10, 1939, Samuel Alschuler died, having no children. Judge Samuel Alschuler is related to the nineteenth century photographer, Samuel Alschuler. The photographer is best known for photographing Abraham Lincoln in Urbana, Illinois, in 1858 in which Lincoln wore Alschuler's black suit coat which was far too small for the political figure. Founded by Captain Benjamin Godfrey to provide education for women, the school offered two years of classes for attendees based on the idea that “if you educate a man you educate an individual; educate a woman and you educate a whole family.” Godfrey selected Reverend Theron Baldwin to serve as the first head of the Monticello Female Seminary. In 1867 Harriet Haskell became principal, a position she held until her death in 1907.  On November 4, 1888, a fire broke out in the building and consumed the entire structure. Ms. Haskell and the school's Board of Trustees successfully fundraised for a new building and rebuilt the school in two years. The school's leadership made the decision to close the school in 1970 with the final class graduating in 1971.
